HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-08-23, Page 2Ken and Liz Sholdice had an
exciting week as daughter Cathy and
crew were home from Prince
Edward Island for a good visit.
I hope you’ve made it to Blyth
Festival at least once or twice this
summer. Once again, the plays are
very well done. Each play of course
is unique and with just a touch of
what you needed to see and hear. For
the three that I’ve seen I related to
Milli as my grandmother Jenkins
lived in Galt and I remember the
excitement when Princess Margaret
visited there and we were part of the
adoring crowd. Rev. Jonah is near
and dear to my heart as a proud
United Church member able to smile
at reality in our midst. Maud is a
good example of the struggles and
joys in the life of rural Canada. Each
play gives us another view of the
world about us and with each one we
learn and grown. Well done Festival
folks.
The excitement at the south end of
Brussels last week was the clearing
out of sludge. The Turnbull/Fritz
pond was given a thorough cleaning
and clearing and it was fun to watch
the machines in motion as the job
was accomplished.
Motocross in Walton was blessed
with great weather as the bikers and
campers enjoyed their annual
gathering. Extra visitors were out
and about in the village for several
days last week as they supported this
sporting event.
Plans are in the works as the
inevitable first day of school
approaches. Grade school kids are
checking pencils and runners. Items
are purchased and rooms are packed
up as college and university kids get
ready to leave the nest.
Parents are torn between great joy
and gloom as the years flash before
their eyes.
The babes of recent years are now
ready for kindergarten and poof,
college is right there. So enjoy each
day of every year.
Don’t waste these last few days of
August – enjoy the world around
you.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Wearing a bicycle helmet is one of
those things that’s not only a smart
idea: it’s the law.
In a recent press release the OPP
expressed alarm at the number of
cyclists riding in Huron County with
no protection.
By law, cyclists under the age of
18 are required to wear an approved
helmet while on the road or
sidewalk. In addition, if parents
allow their children to ride without a
helmet, they can be charged.
Helmets reduce the risk of head
injury between 70 and 80 per cent in
the event of a crash. In addition, the
head is often what absorbs the
majority of injury in bike crashes.
Injuries that can be incurred by a
head blow include brain swelling,
bruising, bleeding or cracking of the
skull. There is also a danger of
breaking fine muscle tissue
connecting different parts of the
brain.
Adults and families who ride their
bikes together are encouraged to
wear their helmets while riding as
well. As children learn by example,
although adults are not legally
required to wear helmets, it
increases safety and sets a good
example.
Helmets range in price from $10
to over $100. They should be
approved by the CSA, ASTM, ANSI
or the SAA. Other helmets, such as
hockey helmets should not be
substituted.
Another tip is to pay close
attention to the padding. Specific
pads are to be positioned so the
helmet is secure and doesn’t move
around while travelling.
Used helmets should not be
considered. It is unknown whether
they have been in a crash before or
not.
The OPP reminded cyclists to
have a fun and safe summer cycling
and wearing properly-fitted helmets.
By Jo-Ann McDonaldAs fall fast approaches, so do themeetings at the Brussels Legion.
Comrades John Lowe and Deb
Cann attended the fall council
meeting held at Wingham.
The Branch had two fish frys to do
this week. The first was for the
Wroxeter Hall Board which had over
225 attend. Comrades helping out
were Glenn Bridge, George Adams,
Rick McDonald, Dale Sauve, Bob
Bridge, Eric Ross, Greg Wilson, and
Lloyd and Mabel Glanville.
The fish fry crew then went to
Hensall and cooked for Habitat for
Humanity to raise funds towards a
home in Hensall for a single mother
and family. The grateful young
woman even came out to thank the
crew which included Glenn Bridge,
George Adams, Rick McDonald,
Cecil Moore, Rob Cardiff, Murray
Lowe and Deb Cann. They fed over
225 as well and had a great day.
The Branch helped out at
motocross bingo on Friday evening
and Comrades Rick McDonald,
Allyson Cardiff, Mike Dauphin and
Andy Overholt did a great job.
Donations of pop cans and
returnable bottles can be left for the
Cadets at the rear of the Legion on
Tuesdays for pick up.
