Lightning U-13 plays strong pool in tourneyBlyth Lightning U-13 soccer team had a strong and difficult pool to play in for the year-end tournament, July 25-28 in Lucknow. The team played hard and the games were all really close, but they only played three games before being eliminated from the tournament. Blyth’s first game was played on July 25 against Goderich I. Josh Raynard played a strong game in net for Blyth, allowing only one goal. He was reaching out to save the ball and snuck past his outreached hand. In the second half, Blyth tied the match after Micah Nonkes took a successful penalty shot against his opponents. There were several shots on both nets, but no more goals were scored. With a tie game a shoot-out would decide the win. Greg Roetcisoender stood up as a goalie for Blyth, making two great saves and letting three goals into the net. Blyth had three misses, with Nonkes and Nadine Otten hitting the crossbar and Nick Brandon kicking the ball above the net. Roetcisoender and Sheree Uyl were successful in getting the ball into the net for their team. Goderich won the shoot-out with one more goal. On July 26, the Lightning played against Clinton Celtic. This was a very strong team, making some great passes, strong kicks and successfully stealing the ball away from their opponents. Clinton scored on a corner kick on Blyth’s keeper, Connor Prescott, in the first half. With just one goal ahead of Blyth it was anyone’s game and both teams poured it on after their half-time break. Nonkes played in net during the second half. He came out to challenge the ball and Clinton maneuvered the ball around him to score and seal the win. Blyth lost 2-0. The Lightning played its final game on July 27 against Clinton Madrid. These two teams were evenly matched. Both teams shot the ball up and down the field taking several shots on net. However, neither of the teams could get a goal and when the final whistle blew there was no score. Raynard played a great game in net to earn a shutout. In the shoot- out Clinton scored four goals on Roetcisoender. Blyth’s Prescott and Sarah Steele got the ball into Clinton’s net. Zach Drost and Averly Kikkert shot the ball right at the Clinton keeper and he made the save. Hunter Broda was on deck and was not needed for the final shot as Clinton already had four goals. This loss meant the end of the tournament for Blyth. The Lightning had a great season of soccer winning half of their games, tying a few and posting a few losses. Coaches Peter Uyl and Colin Bokhout were pleased with the skill, dedication and enthusiasm that the players put forth this season. The Lightning had a large number of players with 21 kids signed on the team. Defensive players were Jeanette Schramm, Sarah Steele, Nick Brandon, Zachary Drost, Alec Lorentz and Matthew Porter. Halfbacks were Cassie Henry, Averly Kikkert, Nadine Otten, Courtney Monk, Emily Uyl, Micah Nonkes and Kody Tachauer. The forwards were Morgan Bos, Marjike Oudshoorn, Madisson Sjaarda, Sheree Uyl, Hunter Broda, Connor Prescott and Greg Roetcisoender. First-year player Raynard had a great season covering the net for Blyth, with some occasional help from Nonkes, Prescott and Roetcisoender. Head on This Blyth player wasted no time redirecting the ball back into the Brussels zone last week as they kicked off the girls U-18 soccer tournament in Blyth at Sparling Field against their cross-town rivals Brussels. Blyth came out striking, finding the back of the net several times before half-time and spending very little time in their own zone. In spite of their small numbers and some coaching changes, coaches say this team played with a lot of skill, heart and determination. The team had some tie games throughout the soccer season and several games that were lost by just one goal. Defensive players were Colin Bokhout, Ross MacDonald, Jacob Nonkes, Mark Siertsema and Jacob VanDorp. Halfbacks were Brendon Boven, Caleb Haak, Kurtis Kolkman, Micah Nonkes, Shawn Reinink, Jordon Rinn, Matt Steele and Ryan Sjaarda. The forwards were Brent Drost, Brandon Schaffe, Jessie Pot and Austin Sjaarda. Kolkman and VanDorp split the job as goalkeeper during this soccer season. The U-15 boys were coached by Beth Whitmore, Mary Ann Drost and Rob (Dutchie) Kolkman. The coaches were very pleased with their team’s performance and improvements over the season and enjoyed coaching this talented and enthusiastic group of boys. The Tigers played Monkton which ended up making it all the way to the finals only to be bested by Mitchell which brought home the gold.
