There were 11 teams and three pools set up for the tournament. Blyth’s first opponent was Goderich I at the Ag Field on July 23. Goderich played strong and aggressive first half scoring three goals on keeper Kurtis Kolkman. Blyth played a very impressive second half taking many shots on their opponent’s net. They worked hard as a team to pass the ball up the field and take some amazing shots on net. Goderich’s goalie kept his team in the game making several beautiful saves. Austin Sjaarda passed the ball up to Brendon Boven for a shot, but the ball connected with the corner post. Brandon Schaffe picked up the loose ball and shot it at the net. With Goderich’s goalie caught at the opposite end of the net, a Goderich defensive player instinctively stopped the ball with his hand. The ball would have gone into the net if the defensive player hadn’t stopped it, so the referee called it a goal and Goderich was given a red card for this illegal play. Goderich still walked away with a 3-1 win. Kolkman was named Man of the Match for standing up in net against this aggressive team. Schaffe and Matt Steele earned honourable mention for their excellent team effort. Blyth’s next match was against St. Columban II on July 24 again at the Ag field. This was an exciting game to watch and coach. Forward Brandon Schaffe got Blyth on the scoreboard with an excellent shot on net. Sjaarda and Brent Drost earned the assist. Then Schaffe made a beautiful cross to Jessie Pot, who scored. St. Columban was able to head the ball into the net before the half-time whistle blew to narrow the lead to 2- 1 for Blyth. St. Columban tied the game on a free kick. Blyth made many shots on net, but couldn’t seem to get the ball to connect. Steele crossed the ball up to his teammate and Sjaarda scored to put Blyth ahead once again. With only minutes left in the game Blyth wanted to protect their lead and played a very defensive game with most players taking a cautious approach and staying back to stop their opponents from shooting on net. The final whistle blew and Blyth slid by with a 3-2 victory. Greg Roetcisoender did a great job covering the net for Blyth, earning Man-of-the-Match. Sjaarda and Pot earned honourable mention for their excellent positioning and endless energy. The team met with disappointment as they learned they were not able to advance in the tournament. With one win and one loss they tied with Goderich I for second place in their pool. So to break the tie, as per tournament rules, goals for and against were looked at and Blyth was down by one point, ending their stay in the tournament. Blyth U-15 boys had a very small On the run This Brussels player spends some precious time with the ball, something Brussels wouldn’t have very much of in their contest against Blyth last week. Blyth came out hard, scoring several times against their neighbours to kick off the girls U-18 tournament in Blyth at Sparling Field. Although the numbers were small the scores were certainly close. When the last putt hit the bottom of the cup there were three tied with identical scores, Linda Walker, Carol Oriold and Fern Wylie. By retrogression rules Linda Walker was declared the winner. *** On Wednesday the seniors played host to 11 golfers from Somerhill Golf Club of Tiverton. Twenty-five local golfers played a Happy Face four-man scramble with a shotgun start. The winner of the closest to the pin on number two award was Tiverton’s Gary Harrigan. Wroxeter’s Bill Brown won the award for the longest putt on number nine. The team scores were close with only five strokes separating the best and the worst. Winning top honours with a score of 35 was the foursome of Tiverton’s Tony Dunn and Jeremy Selwyn and the Wingham pair of Bob Johnston and Dave Montgomery. In second spot with 36 was Tiverton’s Gary Harrigan and Dick Picard and Wingham’s Ed Daer and Gerry Edwards. Wingham seniors will journey to Somerhill Golf Club on Thursday, Aug. 2 with golf action with the Tiverton crew to start at 10 a.m. *** Wednesday men’s night was steak night with 10 teams of three playing a three-man scramble. Top in the A flight was the team of Corey McKee, Chris Michie and Jim Ross with a score of 30. Right on their heels with a 31 was a team with hockey knowledge – coach Mike Henry, Justin Peters goalie for the AHL Albany River Rats and Cal O’Reilly member of the AHL Milwaukee Admirals. Third award with a 32 was the team of John Dailleboust, Kevin Green and Dan McPherson. In the B flight top honours with a 32 went to the team of Terry Armstrong, Steve Nixon and Dan McBurney. There was one skin and that was by the team of Bob Johnston, Jason LeRoux and Doug VanderWoude with a birdie two on number four. *** Thursday’s Buff’s Gang continues to grow with 33 out for golf action. Top low gross with a 35 was won by Kent McPherson followed by Shawn Walker with a 36 and Ed Daer with a 38. Doug Neil won the award for the longest putt on number seven and Shawn Walker was closest to the pin on number four. Two hidden score awards were won by Larry Pellett and Bob Foxton. *** Noticed four girls from the Walton area, Brenda Linton, Mary Bernard, Val Shortreed and Jo-Ann McDonald out on the course taking advantage of the free round of golf they won at the ladies’ curling bonspiel. Was disappointed the girls were not wearing the Holstein-winning outfits that won the award for them. Guess they have put them out to pasture for the summer. It looks as if the girls had a lot of fun, a lot of laughs and covered a lot of miles following their anything-but-straight shots. Wonder when the Libro prize winning Hillbillys will be out to cash in on their curling prize of a round of golf? *** The Wingham Golf Club played host to the “potty cup” with 68 golfers on hand to participate in the four-man scramble with a shotgun start. Winning the cup for the third consecutive year were Joel Riley, Eric and Brett Skinn and a new member this year Mark Hackett. The team came in with a score of nine under beating the Teeswater rookie team of Bill Hayes, Jeremy Johnston, Mark Beitz and Lance Leslie by one stroke. Winning the award for the longest drive was Mark Hackett. Closest to the pin awards were won by Terry Powell on number four, Teeswater’s Jeremy Johnston on number eight, and Formosa’s Ron Kroeplin on number two.
