After a great soccer season, the
Blyth Lightning U-11 soccer team
was forced to bow out early from the
U11 playoff tournament in Clinton.
They came up short on their last
game of round robin play. The
Lightning was put into a tough pool
right off the start and had to face
some stiff competition.
The first game matched the
Lightning up against Seaforth. Ryan
Nesbitt got Blyth off to a good start.
After receiving a pass from Dalton
Carey, he carried the ball past three
defenders before shooting to score.
Mackenzie Nesbitt added to the
Blyth lead scoring one from close
range.
In the second half, the wind
advantage shifted to Seaforth. They
put a number of shots on the Blyth
net and were able to finish within
one goal of Blyth.
The Lightning won 2- 1.
The Lightning's second game was
against Goderich I. Again, R. Nesbitt
got Blyth on the scoreboard first
with a goal off Melissa Van Schaik's
corner kick. R. Nesbitt put Blyth
ahead by two when he was awarded
a penalty shot.
Goderich started the second half
off scoring their first goal. Tyler
Boven, the Lightning net minder,
held Goderich off and even got some
help from the cross bar. Goderich
tied up the game when they got a
penalty shot.
The third game was against
Goderich V. Goderich scored early
in the first half setting the tone for
the game. Goderich scored twice
more in the second half to put the
game out of reach.
Carey scored the only Lightning
goal on the last play of the game.
Blyth lost 3-1. The Lightning's 1-1-
1 record was not enough to keep
them in the tournament.

On the ball
The Brussels U-17 girls had a tough night against Wingham
in recent soccer action. The visitors closed the door on their
hosts taking home a 4-0 victory. However Jill Bridge had it
under control here. (Vicky Bremner photo)
With no soccer games to make up
the Blyth U-15 boys had a week off
before the year-end tournament. The
coaches set up a game against
Wingham.
The teams were very even as they
raced up and down the pitch for
control of the ball. Each team had
several scoring opportunities, taking
some great shots on net.
Wingham was first to score when
they broke through Blyth’s defence.
Blyth then received a lucky break
earning a penalty kick after
Wingham had a handball in their
crease. Colin Bokhout stood up to
take the shot and pocketed the ball
into the corner of the net to score.
After a brief half-time break, the
teams went out and set up for some
more great soccer plays. Blyth was
the first to score in the second half.
Jacob Nonkes booted the ball up the
field. Brandon Schaffe crossed the
ball over to his teammate and Brent
Drost set the ball onto the goal line.
Austin Sjaarda was on it and tapped
it across the line to help Blyth gain
the lead in the game.
Wingham forwards rushed
towards Blyth’s net and scored on
goalie Kurtis Kolkman. Both teams
were trying their best to break the
tie. In the last minutes of the game
Wingham sneaked another goal into
Blyth’s net.
Blyth never gave up and kept
pounding the ball at Wingham’s net.
The game ended with Wingham’s
goalie making a great save.
Coaches were very pleased with
the fantastic effort all of the Blyth
players put forth in this game.
Bokhout was named man-of-the
match for his energy and ball control
while out on the field. Honourable
mention went to defence Mark
Siertsema for making a beautiful
save and Brandon Schaffe for his
great effort throughout the game.
The U-15 boys soccer tournament
is held in Goderich July 23 - 28.
