Former Clinton residents, Harry
Reed and Carmen Klaus have settled
in their new home, in the Benmiller
area.
All the best to our dear friends in
their new surroundings.
As well I would like to wish
Carmen a speedy recovery, and hope
that cast comes off soon.
On July 1, there was an excellent
turnout for the 81st annual Memorial
Service at Ball's Cemetery.
Pastor John Kuperus of the Blyth
Christian Reformed Church was the
speaker and Nancy Park was the
organist.
Marshall and Ethan Durnin played
the violins during the offering and
again later in the service.
Offering special music was the
Gough family of Mt. Brydges, who
sang two numbers. An added treat
was Jim Craig who played the
bagpipes before and after the
service.
The first land for the cemetery was
purchased from Wm. Ball in 1857
and the first burial was Mrs.
Jim (Sarah) Rapson, in September
1857.
There has been land purchased
three more times, in addition to
the original half acre. There
were regular services in the
church until 1905. In June 1924,
the deed of the property was
transferred to individual plot
holders. Since that time the
cemetery has been cared for
under the guidance of a board of
trustees.
The present trustee board consists
of chairman Bill Seers and trustees
Charlie Adams, Dennis Penfound,
Ron Durnin, Sheron Stadlemann,
Gordon Daer and Garnet Wright.
The superintendent is Daryl Ball and
the secretary/treasurer is Vera
Penfound.
The trustees are pleased to hear
the remarks from those who feel the
cemetery is well kept.
The trustees are always grateful
for the donations received, as it
helps greatly towards the upkeep of
the cemetery.
The ladies of the Walkerburn Club
will meet at Ball’s Cemetery at
1:40 on Tuesday, July 17 to travel
to Restview Retirement Home to
sing old time songs with the
residents.
Each member is asked to bring a
few cookies.
I’ve been asked to clarify an item I
reported a couple of weeks ago. On
June 6, the fire squad from Blyth
was called to extinguish a small fire
at the home of Rob McCool. The
problem was actually a car on fire
outside and to the back of the shed.
No actual damage was done to the
shed as a reader might have assumed
from the earlier report. The McCool
family felt the first report may
dissuade prospective buyers of their
property.
Several weeks ago I caught a
report on the evening news about
just how expensive it is for Bell
Canada to maintain the service of
public telephones, far more than thecost to a user for a call. They werecontemplating an increase in the costof a call from a phone booth andremoving some of the locations. It seems that Londesborough haslost its phone booth, but for quiteanother reason. Just aroundsuppertime on Tuesday the villagephone booth was taken out by an
errant car. A woman was headed
north and attempted to make a left-
hand turn at the main intersection of
the village. However she didn’t see
an oncoming vehicle and was
clipped by another car.
There were no casualties except
for one driver’s pride and the phone
booth. The second car narrowly
missed the corner of the restaurant
so the accident might have been
more serious.
Don’t forget that this coming
Saturday, village families will be
holding yard sales. There are now
nine declared locations on the list at
the post office. Surely you’ll find
something you need on at least one
or two of the tables.
50 years in the making
Roelf Bos turned 50 last week, and expected some
tomfoolery as it is Dutch tradition to pull each others’ legs
on the 50th birthday. This display was one of three strewn
around Bos’s property, each one with a story linking back to
Bos’s life. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
On June 27, the Happy Gang
Seniors met at the Londesborough
Hall.
The new executive is: past
president, Phyllis Tyndall; president,
Mary Peel; secretary, Betty Millar;
treasurer, Helen Dale.
Mike Powell of London was the
guest speaker. He is associated with
the University of Western Ontario.
Since the late 1980s he has been in
India working on a projects to
improve the quality of life.
One is to increase the number of
trees and available wood for the
Indian people to make items. Also
plant materials are used for woven
mats. Many Indians eat only one
meal a day and need firewood for
cooking. Mike noted that many folk
appear to be homeless, living on the
crowded streets.
