Please Recycle This Newspaper The undead are preparing to unleash delicious brain-eating fun upon poor, hapless living folk next weekend. For the first time ever, the dead will rise on The Square in Goderich, shuffle around for a bit, then head to the Lions Harbour Park as part of Huron County’s first ever Zombie March. If you don’t make a point of protecting your brain on Friday the 13th, Kimberly Hart says, “don’t say I didn’t warn you.” The event has been spearheaded by Hart, a 20-year old Goderich resident, full-time chef and head she- zombie. She said that the intent of the march is to acknowledge and celebrate Huron County youth. “[Goderich] hasn’t really recognized youth when they plan things,” she said, citing the Summerfest refreshment tent as being age of majority, and the Children’s Festival being more for the toddler to pre-teen crowd. “So I decided that this is something that we can do together in honour of the youth.” The zombie theme encourages participants to ‘dress their worst’, and Hart describes it as Halloween for the older kids, replacing candy with gory brains. “Well I think that everyone likes to dress up,” she said. “And it’s Friday the 13th, so what better chance to make yourself over like a zombie?” She explained that a Zombie March isn’t an original concept. In fact, similar marches, or Zombie Walks, have been staged in cities across North America for years. Toronto, Boston, San Francisco and even Australia host annual zombie walks that see attendance reach into the hundreds. “I’ve had a lot of positive feedback from the community so far, and even adults have shown an interest in the march.” Since the zombie-like lurch through the streets and post- entertainment is scheduled later in the evening, Hart said that the event isn’t for those who are under the high school age. “Its more for teenage youth to the older zombie enthusiast,” she said. So, how many people are willing to trade in their casual Friday attire for ghoulish make-up and parade the streets? Quite a few, apparently. “I’m expecting to see at least one hundred people at the march,” she said, although her web-based information group for the event on www.facebook.com boasts more than 200 members. The march is set to take place at 9 p.m. when the vitally deficient are asked to meet on The Square and lurch their way down West Street enroute to Harbour Park where musical guests Remember Us Always, The Mafat Conspiracy, Colossus and Distrot are set to perform. The unofficial event theme is ‘no booze, no drugs, no attitude’, and Hart has arranged for security to monitor the event, which is scheduled to last until 1 a.m. Although the march itself is a free event, concert entrance fees are set at $5 per zombie and $7 for the living (not dressed-up). Hart explained that the original idea was that the goulish night be free for all, however organizational costs exceeded expectation. “All money spent on this event is coming from my own pocket,” she said. The proceeds from the event will go toward the cost, but Hart added that if there are any funds left over, she would like to donate them to a youth program in Huron County. “I know that I am personally making a cash sacrifice to make this event possible, and [personal] gain is not my goal,” she said. “Our [community] really needs this event, and I intend to make it happen.” For more information on the event, officially titled Goderich’s first Zombie March, contact Hart by phone at 519-524-1905, or e-mail at web address monster_kookies@hotmail.com. Zombies come to Goderich on Friday the 13th Yuck! Goderich may never be the same after Friday the 13th. Kim Hart is planning the first Goderich Zombie March for this Friday to offer something fun for the youth of the community. (Signal Star photo) By Dominique Milburn Goderich Signal Star
