direction you choose,
You are on your own and
you know what you know,
and you are the person who
will decide where to go.”
By Dr. Seuss
Fellow graduates, Mr. Snell,
teachers, parents and guests. It is
hard to believe that we have already
been together for 10 years … 10
years!
Ten years ago many of us started
here barely knowing our ABCs. As
we travelled first through the pri-
mary hall then moving over to the
senior hall we learned our ABCs of
education. However, little did we
know that we were subconsciously
learning our ABCs of life.
So class let’s review…
A – Accept differences in others
and realize that they make every-
one unique.
B – Be a friend a friend would like
to have
C – Courage, we have shown
courage to reach our graduation,
and we will need continued
courage to face our future chal-
lenges.
D – Dream, may all your dreams
come true, for without dreams
there are no goals.
E – Empathy, to walk in another
person’s shoes.
F – Fairness.
G – Give freely, of yourself and it
will be returned.
H – Honesty.
I – Integrity, be honest and sincere,
because people will remember that
about you.
J – Journey, our life is a journey not
a destination, Grade 8 is just a pit
stop on this journey called life.
K – Keep confident, you know
what you want, be confident in
that.L – Love truly, my hope isthat this class will continuethe friendships and love thatwe have truly shared atGrey.M – Master something, every challenge we master
is another step forward.
N – Nurture hope, always
hope for a better tomorrow.
O – Optimism, may your glass
always be half full.
P – Perseverance, if we want it we
can achieve it.
Q – Quell Rumours, if you never
start a rumour, you never have to
stop it.
R – Respect, in order to be respect-
ed, you must respect.
S – Seek knowledge, ask your
teachers, they are full of it.
T – Touch lives, every interaction,
with every person, influences their
life, whether you know about it, or
not.
U – Understand, comprehend what
someone is trying to tell you.
V – Volunteer, give your time, the
rewards will follow.
W – Win graciously.
X – Xeriscape, a word to improve
your scrabble score.
Y – Yearn for peace, peace of mind,
peace of heart and peace with your-
self and others.
Z – Zealously face your future, but
never forget your past.
I challenge my fellow classmates
to remember these ABCs and to live
by them daily.
Now how about a little trip down
memory lane. Ten years ago we
started JK, the gym was so big and
the older kids looked like giants. Of
course, the best part of kindergarten
was playtime, story time and I’m not
sure about everybody else but my
favourite was nap time.
After those two years of kinder-
garten flew by, we all flew into first
grade. Mrs. Goodall was there to
welcome us, but not for too long.
She soon left to have a baby and
Miss Harrison took her spot as our
morning teacher and Miss
Burkholder as our afternoon.
Now I am sure that one memory
we all share is the memory of Mr.
Park’s class. It was always nice to
take a break from our difficult
Grade 2 studies to listen to him
play his banjo or tell us campfire
stories.
Grade 3 brought us Mrs.
Hemingway, but again not for too
long. She also left to have a baby.
Mrs. McKeon was then left with the
mission to help us accomplish our
Grade 3 EQAO testing. She must
have done a good job, because we all
made it into Grade 4.
Grade 4 then brought us a test of a
different kind. French with Madame
C. Although challenging for us and
frustrating for our parents she did
manage to teach us a second lan-
guage. Merci beaucoup Madame.
Might I also add that this was one
of our first years as a split class.
Mrs. Taylor taught our Grade 3/4s
and Mrs. Murray taught our Grade
4/5s until she too left to have a baby
and Miss Aarssen was left to teach
the rest of the year.
Grades 5, 6 and 7 brought us Mrs.
Murray, Mr. Bartlett, Mrs. Strome
and Ms Ward-Weber. They have al
had a guiding hand in directing us
toward our last year at Grey
Central.
Now Grade 8 … what can be said
about our last year at Grey? Well,
most days it was very similar to
kindergarten. There was playtime,
i.e. music and gym. Story time i.e.
Mr. Payne’s life story, which then
generally led to nap time. (Just kid-
ding Mr. Payne).
It has been exciting building up to
this evening with the grad trip, the
memory video, the grad shopping,
all the hair appointments and pic-
tures, pictures, pictures. I must say
we all look very dashing tonight.
At this point I would like to thank
my fellow graduates for selecting
me as valedictorian. It is a great hon-
our for me to speak on your behalf
tonight. I will treasure the memory
always. I have only commented on a
few memories from the past 10 years
and I am sure that we would never
get to the after party if I had to speak
on every memory.
Tonight we have reached the goal
of graduation, that at one time
seemed so far away. We will have
many more goals throughout our
lifetime and remembering the ABCs
of education and life will help us all
to achieve our best.
You have brains in your head, you
have feet in your shoes,
You can steer yourself any direc-
tion you choose.
You’re on your own and you know
what you know
And you are the person, who will
decide where to go.
Congratulations class of 2007.
Dream big and aim high. We deserve
the best!
