The Brussels U-8 soccer squad
travelled to Newton with a very
small squad. Two young girls,
Brooklyn Mitchell and Dana
Dolmage were brought up to play
and did a great job.
Brussels started the game with
Delayna Smith scoring. Jack Pipe
assisted.
Newton scored, then it was back
and forth with Smith scoring three,
assisted by Kortney Mitchell,
Leanne Exel and Devin Bachert. The
final score was 4-3.
The team got great goaltending by
Jake Mitchell and Dean Scarrow.

A Blyth youth is off to a national
championship.
Darcey Cook is a member of the
Chepstow Colts Midget fastball team
which placed third at the 20-team
Ontario elimination tournament held
in Owen Sound June 29, 30 and July
1. This earned the team the right to
represent Ontario at the Canadian
tournament in Saskatoon Aug. 13-19.
The Colts played their first game
on the Friday night against Fullarton.
It took a couple of innings for the
boys to settle down, but by the fifth
inning Chepstow had built a 5-0 lead.
The team doubled that lead to 10-0 in
the seventh to take the first win.
Chepstow came up against the
strong hometown favourite, Owen
Sound, on Saturday. The Colts
jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the
first inning, but Owen Sound replied
with a run midway through the game
to tie the score.
Chepstow led off the top half of the
seventh with a solo homerun and
shut the door in the bottom half of
the inning, holding on to the 2-1
victory.
In the Colt’s third game of the
tournament, they met the Linwood
Chiefs. Linwood took an early 3-0
lead and although Chepstow had
several runners on base, the squad
could only manage to push one
across the plate, losing 3-1.
Playing on the consolation side of
the schedule Sunday morning the
Colts faced off against Kitchener and
captured a 2-0 victory. Chepstow
faced Brantford in its next test and
stayed alive in the tournament by
earning a 7-6 come-from-behind
win.
The Colts took the lead in the first
inning with a three-run homerun.
The two teams traded runs in the
third inning and Brantford scored
again in the fourth.
Holding on to a 4-2 lead in the
fifth, the Colts ran into a few
problems as Brantford scored four
times to go ahead 6-4.
The Chepstow squad did not give
up. The first three batters in the sixth
loaded the bases and all three
eventually scored to take the lead
back going into the seventh.
Brantford had the tying run on first
base but could not advance the
runner as the Colts defence shut the
door to preserve the 7-6 victory.
With third place and a shot at the
nationals already locked up, the
Colts would relax for their next game
against the Linwood team. A victory
would have moved Chepstow into
second place, but the rested Linwood
team came out swinging and
defeated the Colts 5-0.
Napanee finished first, Linwood
second and Chepstow third. All three
teams will represent Ontario in the
national tournament in Saskatoon
Aug. 13-19. Cook says this is a
dream come true.
This week the Blyth U-13
Lightning soccer team played
against the Goderich Lions.
Tyler Boven started in net for
Blyth. The action started early with
teams exchanging offensive rushes.
Goderich struck first with an early
goal.
The Lightning responded with
Ryan Nesbitt netting his first goal,
Megan Hoggart and Marion
Studhalter assisted.
Goderich went ahead scoring a
second goal.
Blyth battled back with Dalton
Carey and Hoggart teaming up to get
the ball up to Nesbitt who scored to
tie the game.
Wyatt Carey took over in net for
the second half and had to make a
couple of key saves to keep the game
tied.
Later in the second half Nesbitt
completed his hattrick, scoring his
third goal of the game.
The Lightning held the one-goal
lead for the win.
