The Blyth Lightning U-13s
travelled to Goderich on Tuesday,
July 3 for their weekly soccer game.
Connor Prescott put on the goalie
gear for Blyth and did a great job
covering the net for his team.
The first half showed both teams
playing a strong half, as they moved
the ball up and down the soccer
pitch. Greg Roetcisoender scored on
a penalty kick to get his team started.
Goderich scored to tie up the game
while on a breakaway just a few
seconds before the half-time whistle
blew.
Blyth got off to a frustrating start
in the second half of the game, as
several of their goals were called or
whistled “off” for being off sid.
Nadine Otten got the ball away from
her opponents and booted the ball up
the field. Madison Sjaarda ran for
the ball and scored for her team.
This goal seemed to help give
Blyth the boost they needed as they
dominated the remainder of the
game. Sheree Uyl was next to earn
an assist when she crossed the ball
over to Sjaarda for her second goal
of the night. Roetcisoender got the
ball close to the right side of the
Goderich’s net and Morgan Bos
tipped the ball into the net to widen
the lead for Blyth.
Otten was able to barrel through
her opponents and crossed the ball
up to Hunter Broda who picked up
the ball, ran towards the net and
scored Blyth’s final goal of the
night.
Goderich finished up the game
with a beautiful high ball lobed right
into Blyth’s net. The final score was
5-2 for Blyth.
Coaches said, Lightning played a
great game. “All players worked
together to gain control of the ball
and take some terrific shots on net.
They also worked hard to keep the
ball out of their end to slow down
their opponents. Both skill and
determination to never give up,
helped Blyth to win this soccer
game.”

The Blyth U-15 Girls soccer team
played against Lucknow Knechtels
last week.
Blyth put a lot of pressure on in
the early going. After being stopped
by the Lucknow goalie a couple of
times, Alanna Uyl scored with a
high shot into the net. Ally Snell
picked up an assist. Uyl assisted on
the next goal when her initial shot
was stopped by the goalie and Laura
Youngblut picked up the rebound
and scored.
Lucknow got their offence going
breaking through the Blyth defence
to score the next two goals to tie the
game.
Uyl struck again with another goal
from a nice give and go from Snell.
Blyth went ahead by two when
Youngblut scored on a penalty shot.
Lucknow came back capitalizing
on some defensive mistakes and
scored twice to tie the game.
The second half ended in a tie so
the game went into a shoot out. Of
the first five shooters for Blyth,Aryn
Kikkert and Youngblut scored.
Chantal Warwick, the Blyth
netminder, made a couple of saves
and the Lucknow shooters only
scored twice as well.
This put the game into a sudden
death shoot out. The first shooter for
Blyth, Alex Raynard, scored for an
overtime win for Blyth.

Last week the Wingham golf
course was a beehive of activity
with 50 young golfers on hand for
the junior golf clinic.
Instructors Dave Meriam, Ed
Daer, Mark Hackett and Trevor
Hopf certainly had their hands full
controlling this enthusiastic group
of boys and girls – our future
members. They certainly livened
up the clubhouse and kept Laurie
and her kitchen crew busy feeding
this sudden surge of hungry
youngsters. Nice to see a good
number of girls on hand for the
clinic.
Parents beware: these young
graduates of the golf clinic will
surprise you with their skill at such
a young age.

With the weather channel
forecasting all-day rain and
thunderstorms only 10 were out for
Wednesday’s seniors’ and two of
the 10 did not finish due to a
sudden sprinkle and threatening
skies.
Bob Gavreluk had a strong finish.
Getting pars on the last two holes
was good enough to give him a tie
with Wayne Gordon for top spot.
Bob Johnston captured third spot.
***
Weather also played havoc with
Wednesday’s men’s night with only
13 out for golf action. Dan
Campbell with five pars, a birdie on
number six and bogies on all the
tough par threes came in with a 37
for best score of the night. Tied for
second with one stroke more were
Steve Nixon and Rob Gallaher with
38s.
There was only one skin and that
went to Kent McPherson with a two
on the eight hole.
The Hopfs had a battle for family
bragging rights but dad Eric
finished strong with pars on last
two holes to tie son Trevor – both
with 39s. There being no winner
this week means a real battle for
bragging rights next week! Pins
were won by Corey McKee on
number two, Steve Nixon, number
four and Kent McPherson on
number eight.
***
Coming in the future – more tee-
offs. Did you notice the huge piles
of topsoil? Plans call for a forward
tee on the first and second holes
with the new tee on number nine
making for a longer hole which will
test the long-ball hitters.

Thursday night golf had three
dozen on hand. For the third week
in a row Terry Powell retained his
position on the leader board with a
37. Right on his heels was Trevor
Hopf with a 38. Bill Robinson was
in third with a 40.
Closest to the pin on number
three from the red tees was Russ
Danbrook. Bill Quipp had the hot
putter with the longest putt on
number six. Hidden score winners
were a Teeswater pair, Perry Hauck
and Dave Montgomery.
