The Citizen, 2007-07-05, Page 15THE CITIZEN. THURSDAY, JULY 5, 2007. PAGE 15.By Rev. Dave WoodHuron Chapel EvangelicalMissionary ChurchMy oh my! Summer is here
already and holidays are around the
corner and I have so much to do I
can’t even think straight!
According to some, I never could
think straight but nonetheless, I am
doing some kind of thinking because
there are a lot of thoughts going on
in this little old mind. With painting
and yardwork and trying to figure
out travel plans, there is so much on
the plate that it seems impossible to
get it all eaten. Not that I ever have
had any trouble cleaning my platebut the kind of plate I am talkingabout is one that I often wonder if itis necessary loading up.
We try to fit so much into our lives
that all too often time flies by and we
are left wondering where it went. We
want to enjoy the beauty of summer
but it seems we sure have a lot to do
just to enjoy it.
How do you slow down? How do
you learn to value that which is
valuable and simply enjoy the life
that God gave us?
I remember my father-in-law
talking about whom they have
dropped in to see or had over etc.,etc., and I thought about what hesaid and how our society haschanged so much.
It seems that very few have time
for each other and to drop in on
someone is almost taboo. We have
all the gadgets and all the toys but is
there any time for people? Do we
begrudge a visitor at the door? Do
we feel comfortable arriving
unannounced?
What is happening to the social
fabric of our society where so many
seem so busy and no one has time
for family and friends? What if we
took one day at a time? What if we
actually learned to relax?
There would be major
repercussions on the economy.
Counsellors and druggists would be
in less demand as stress levels eased
off and the sale of aspirin would
plummet.
Life is busy. Maybe it is too busy?
Jesus had a busy life too. His
ministry was going full tilt and there
was never an end to the needs around
Him and He could either exhaustHimself in serving the people orpractise moderation and setboundaries and remain sane. In
Matthew 14 Jesus had been healing
and feeding the people but it reads
that He left them all behind and
“went up on a mountainside by
Himself to pray.”
Why?
Because I think He was tired. I
think He needed a break from the
demands that the people were
placing upon Him and He needed to
simply spend time with His Father.
If Jesus needed to come apart and
rest in the presence of God, how
much more do we? Needs will
always be around us. Schedules will
always be demanding our attention
and people will always be trying toget us to “do” something. We need to come apart and rest inthe Father or in this rat-race of life
we will simply “come a part”. This
summer we need to stop and smell
the roses. We need to evaluate the
schedule and realign it with the
things that really matter and the best
way to do this is to spend time with
the Father and let Him speak to the
heart and restore the soul because it
as the Psalmist writes, “He makes
me lie down in green pastures, He
leads me beside quiet waters, He
restores my soul.”
Jesus knew this. Jesus practised
this and then He went out and made
time for the things that mattered.
What matters to you?
