BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, July 1 was Ollie Craig.
Ushering were Elaine Brown and
Nancy Hakkers. Guest pianist was
Amanda Swartzentruber. Guest
speaker Tom Dunbar welcomed
everyone to church on Canada’s
140th birthday.
The first hymn was O’ Canada.
The children’s story was about
how well we know Canada. Mr.
Dunbar asked, What was Canada’s
National animal? The answer is
beaver. The second questions was
What is Canada’s national bird?
After many suggestions the common
loon was the right answer.
The singing of The Lord’s Prayer
was followed by the reading of the
scripture from Galatians 5:13-16,
22-25. Ollie Craig led the 67th
Psalm responsively.
Mr. Dunbar’s message to the
adults was God’s Nation. He gave a
few facts about Canada. In the 1800s
Canada was known as Upper and
Lower Canada. One-hundred-and-
forty years ago Canada became the
Dominion of Canada.
As Canadians we have a lot to
stand up and be proud of, he said.
Canadians live very close to the
earth and the country was founded
on the basic Christian religion. Our
flag is red and white which are the
same colours that are in both the
British and French flags. Canada is a
land of many different people and in
the God’s eyes we are all equal. We
should love our neighbours as
ourselves.
The beaver helped Canada build as
a nation as thousands of beaver pelts
were shipped to Europe. The beaver
was on the first Canadian three-cent
stamp in 1851.
