It most assuredly is in the Blyth Legion, Branch 420, where John is a member. Our local Auburn area resident has hit a big bull’s eye on the national dart scene. Darts is one of those sports that doesn’t care so much how old you are, or even how fit you are. But it is a sport that requires some dedication, practise and skill. John Verwey along with wife Heather, also a dart player, arrived in Everet, Ontario in march of this year, where John was one of 36 hopefuls for the provincial dart singles title. The task of surpassing all other contenders wasn’t easy, but he did it. This brought John to Prince Edward Island from May 18 - 21. The hosting branch #18 was Miscouche, P.E.I. The winners for 2007 of the doubles title was won by Newfoundland and the team title went to Quebec. Each province had sent their best; 10 participants were on hand for the tournament just outside Summerside. Nine rounds were played. Tension mounting with each round, wife Heather on the sidelines was herself feeling the pressure John was under. When the final tally was in, he won 21 out of 27 games, putting him just four ahead of Quebec and five ahead of Newfoundland. With the dart talent funnelled from each and every Branch across Canada and narrowed down to one victorious contender who comes from within our own community, it becomes an amazing feat. June 12-15, John arrived in Saskatoon for the Canadian national sponsored by the National Dart Federation of Canada, (NDFC). This is a separate affiliation from the provincial and national competitions hosted through the Legions. This is a World Cup Qualifying Tournament. The National ranking system takes the top eight qualifiers from each Province and three territories as well as the top 16 from across Canada who have qualified through a point system. Once again, both John and Heather found the tension palpable. All efforts paid off however and John came away with a spot on the World Dart Team. The World Cup competition will be held in October in the Netherlands just outside Amsterdam. While John has a lot of family in the area they are to visit, he will most likely be staying close to all the action. Practice The emergency services training site in Blyth was in use last week with several firefighters and emergency workers, pictured left, spending the afternoon performing drills to keep them sharp. These men were lowering a dummy into a building in a harness. Other firefighters were in a fire simulation; while a cargo trailer was flooded with smoke, it was furnished as a mock house and drills were carried through.
