Champs
A group of U-11 soccer players from the Blyth area came together to play in the Lucknow
Strawberry Summerfest this past weekend, and came home champions. Back row, from left:
Mackenzie Nesbitt, Julia Tyler, Megan Hoggart, Mikayla Henry, Melissa Van Schaik, Rick Pot,
coach Jerry Bremner, Ariva Vellenga, Braydon Whitfield, Quintin Sjaarda, Charlene Schramm,
Alex Peters, Trystan Weber, Wyatt Carey. Front: Dalton Carey, Ryan Nesbitt, Evan Kikkert,

Blyth U-11 Lightning and
Thunder soccer teams combined to
create the Blyth Storm U-11 soccer
team for the Lucknow Strawberry
Summerfest soccer tournament last
weekend.
The first game was against Clinton
Manchester. The teams traded
chances but Blyth couldn’t beat the
Clinton goalie. Blyth came on hard
in the last 10 minutes of the game
keeping Clinton pinned down in
their own end but never managed to
score.
The game went into a shootout
with each team sending five players
to shoot. Megan Hoggart scored as
did Ryan Nesbitt but again the
Clinton goalie came up with some
big saves. The Clinton shooters also
scored twice leaving the game tied.
So it went into a sudden death shoot
out. Clinton scored first to win the
game 3-2.
The Storm’s second game was
against the Goderich Legion.
Goderich gave Blyth a hard time and
tested goalie, Evan Kikkert early in
the match.
The Storm offence pressed hard
but the Goderich goalie stood them
up every time. Blyth broke the
deadlock with some good team work
when Charlene Schram passed the
ball up to Nesbitt who scored.
Kikkert was solid in net for the
rest of the match and Blyth’s one
goal lead held for the win.
The Storm’s third and final round
robin game was against Wingham
Gift Chest. The offence came to life
scoring four goals and the defence
shutout the Wingham offence
allowing the Storm to coast to a 4- 0
win.
Nesbitt led the scoring with two
goals and Dalton Carey and Trystan
Weber each picked up 1. Assists
went to Alex Peters, Rick Pot,
Weber, Megan Hoggart, Nesbitt,
Wyatt Carey and Quintin Sjaarda.
The final standings put Blyth in
second place after the round robin
play thanks in part to their low goals
against average. This put the Storm
up against first-place Clinton United,
which had won all three of their
games.
In the final match the teams came
out playing hard but both were
playing the third game of the day.
The Storm slowly took control of
the match and Peters scored early
with Nesbitt assisting. Peters then
assisted when Sjaarda scored with a
good shot low into the corner.
Nesbitt scored the final goal with
Weber assisting.
The players started to tire in the
second half and the game slowed
down a bit.
The Storm cruised to a 3-0 win to
take the first place in the tournament
and the gold medal.

It was mush ball tournament time in Ethel on a beautiful
weekend. The Candians from Atwood and Listowel took a
beating in this game against the host village’s Lint Lickers,
losing 11-4. (Vicky Bremner photo)
The Ethel Squirts hosted
Benmiller June 18 and were
trounced for their efforts.
Scoring seven runs in three
different innings, Benmiller took the
contest 27-13. Benmiller received
tremendous run support from
pitcher Carson Lamb, who helped
his cause by hitting two home runs,
one being a grand slam. Trevor
Lockie also touched them all with a
home run in the first inning.
Mitchell Kramer had Ethel’s lone
home run of the game, while he
added some innings on the mound
in a losing effort.
Ethel’s other pitchers were Justin
Schott and Brittney Rabek, while
Chad Kernighan closed out the
game for Benmiller.
Ethel will round out the home-at-
home set with Benmiller July 10,
when they travel to Benmiller,
followed closely by a contest July
