During the first half of the game a Blyth player knocked down his opponent while running for the ball. This allowed Bayfield to take a direct kick. Blyth didn’t see that ball coming and the ball sailed right into the net. Bayfield scored again when Blyth’s goalie Jacob VanDorp stopped the ball the first time, but couldn’t reach the ball on the rebound shot. The first half also saw Blyth’s goalie flattened to the ground by an aggressive Bayfield striker, so the striker received a red card and was removed from the game. Blyth would now be able to play with a man advantage for the few minutes that remained in this half. At halftime the referee decided to change the red card to a yellow and Bayfield’s striker was back in the game. In the second half of the game, Blyth took advantage of their corner kick and scored a goal. Colin Bokhout lobbed a beautiful ball in front of the Bayfield net and Matt Steele cleaned up the ball and directed it into the net. Bayfield headed another goal into the net off a corner kick. With many more great plays and shots on net, Blyth was unable to score again before the final whistle blew. Bayfield won 3-1. Man of the match was given to Ross MacDonald, who was finally able to play his first game of the season after a shoulder injury and did a great job on defence. Blyth’s U-15s lose by one to Bayfield Wingham II hosted a game againstBlyth U-13 Lightnings at theGalbraith field on June 21.The teams were very evenlymatched and the ball was volleyedup and down the soccer pitch.Defenders from both teams did a great job getting the ball out of theirend, putting a stop to many of theattempted shots on net. Blyth’s halfbacks showed somegreat ball control as they deked theball around their opponents andworked hard to steal the ball away, if they didn’t have possession of it.Blyth’s keeper Josh Raynard madesome great saves to keep his team inthe game. This contest had all theelements of a great game of soccer,but in the end there was no score, nowinner or losers. Blyth U-11 Lightning soccer team played against Clinton Milan last week. Both teams showed a strong offensive game. The Clinton goalie kept Blyth out of their net while Tyler Boven kept Clinton off the score board. Blyth pulled ahead getting the first goal. Wyatt Carey played the ball up to Megan Hoggart to score. The Lightning offence kept rolling with Hoggart scoring again. Ryan Nesbitt and Dalton Carey assisting. W. Carey scored the next goal with Nesbitt getting another assist. In the second half the tables |turned with Clinton’s offence taking over. Clinton scored two goals early in the second half and were still pounding away at the Lightning net. Boven came up with some big saves to carry Blyth’s one goal lead to the end. Blyth held on for a 3- 2 win. Blocking It was a close one when Blyth U-11 Lightning hosts Clinton in recent soccer action. The teams battled to a 3-2 finish with Blyth on the winning side. Bag tags are available for purchase in Blyth at Tasty Treats, Blyth Building Supplies and the Village Barber. There were 16 out for Seniors Wednesday golf at the Wingham golf course. Grant Currie recorded the only birdie of the day with a three on the par four ninth hole. Wayne Gordon walked away with first prize. Bill Deans and Bob Gavreluk had a real match going and tied for second. In the show position was a pair of Bills, Bill Brown and Bill Johnston. Seniors golf for June 27 has been cancelled to accommodate a ladies tourney with proceeds for Huron County Shelter for Women. *** On Father’s Day June 17, friends unveiled the bench near the first tee in memory of the late Bill Dauphin. It’s a beauty! *** Two dozen plus one were out for Wednesday men’s night. Looks like Terry Powell has finally got those new irons under control as he hit the leader board with a 37. Understand Terry went out and played the back nine in a part 35 for an 18-hole total of 72 – well done Terry. Second low gross tied with 39s were Rob Gallaher and John Dailleboust. Low nets went to Roger Lloyd, Joe Clark and Doug Neil. Neil Bieman won a skin with a birdie three on the third hole and the other skin to Joel Riley with a four on that long part- five seventh hole. Closest to the pin awards were won by Dennis Knox, Brendan Chester and Trevor Machan. Wednesday, June 27 is the ever- popular steak night. *** Moms and dads remember July 2- 9 is Take Your Kid to Golf Week. Golf is free for juniors under the age of 16 accompanied by a paying adult. This is a great way to spend a couple of hours of parent/child bonding. *** The numbers continue to grow with 32 golfers on hand Thursday night. For the second night in a row Terry Powell hit the leader board with a 36. Second low gross went to Mark Foxton with a 38 and third low gross to Bill Robinson with his 39. The award for the longest putt on number nine was won by Brian Marston. Terry Powell was closest to the pin on number two. There were two winners this week as there were two hidden scores. John Rozendal won one and the other went to Joe O’Rourke. *** Golf operations manager Dave Merian is holding a junior golf clinic July 2-6. This is an excellent chance to have the juniors get their game fine tuned. History has proven in the past, youth attending the clinics find their golf scores improving almost instantly. For further details contact Dave Meriam at the club, 519-357-2179. *** The ladies’ match play is underway and the men’s match play is ready to roll. Who will be our match play champions? Competition will be keen in both divisions. *** How many are able to golf at the age of 87. Hats off to our super senior Clayton Ruppel who at 87 came in with a nine-hole score of 48 and played the back nine in 51 for 18 hole score of 99. Well done Clayton! Short Putts – By Bill Johnston Lightning wins U-13s play to scoreless tie The U-10 Brussels soccer team travelled to Elma-Logan recently and came out on the right end of a 9- 1 victory. Brussels wasted no time, spreading the production around getting goals from six different players and assists from seven. Leading the scoring was Carl Dow who had two goals and one assist. Dalen Martin and Tim Waechter both had two goals apiece, while Laura Souch and Matt Terpstra both chipped in a goal each. Lexi Smith scored one goal and assisted on two others, while McKinnley Mitchell, Cody Rathwell, Gregory Ward and Emma Strome also had assists. Rounding out the assists was Eric VanNes, who had one, and rounded out the rest of his time in net, taking over for Scott Dolmage. U-10s celebrate huge victory
