Blyth U-13 sent a team made up of players from the Thunder and Lightning co-ed soccer league and called themselves Blyth Storms. The Storms played all their games on Saturday, June 23. The squad played an 8 a.m. game against Lucknow Power. Game captains were Micah Nonkes and Jan Paul VanDorp. Connor Prescott and Greg Roetcisoender took turns covering the net and earned a shutout. Greg Roetcisoender scored two goals in the first half. Madison Sjaarda earned the assist for the first goal and Leendert VanDorp earned the assist for the second goal. There were many scoring opportunities and great plays in the second half but neither team was successful in getting the ball past the goalie. The Storms won this game 2- 0 and were awarded three points. Blyth’s next opponent was Wingham Blue for a 1 p.m. game. Captains were Jeanette Schramm and Sjaarda. Derek deBoer got his team on the scoreboard with a goal early in the game, after chipping the ball into the net on a pass from Roetcisoender. deBoer then passed the ball across the field and Roetcisoender scored. The Storms were keen to widen their lead. deBoer and Nonkes worked the ball up the field and Roetcisoender booted it into the net. VanDorp made a nice shot one net, but it hit the crossboard. Sjaarda picked up the loose ball and shot the ball towards the net, but the goalie stopped it. Roetcisoender found the ball and scored his third goal of the game before the halftime whistle blew. In the second half the Storms were only able to get one ball into the net as Wingham tightened up their defence line. Kathryn Peach worked the ball up the side of the field, before passing the ball infield. Jan Paul VanDorp picked up the pass and scored the final goal of the game. Prescott and Nonkes earned a shutout with the Storms winning the game 5-0 and earning three points. The Storms met the Seaforth Centurions at 4 p.m.. Captains were Micah Nonkes and Leendert VanDorp. Prescott covered the net for the first half. Seaforth was able to get two goals past prescott. The first goal was scored after Seaforth headed the ball into the net on a corner kick. Seaforth had a breakaway for the next goal and Blyth’s defence couldn’t get back to stop them from taking the shot and scoring. After a snack and pep talk, Blyth came out strong in the second half. deBoer crossed the ball over to this teammate and Roetcisoender shot the ball into the net. The Storms tied up the game after Roetcisoender and deBoer worked the ball around their opponents and VanDorp nailed the ball into the net. Blyth really poured on the power, but was unable to get the ball past Seaforth’s goalkeeper. This meant the game ended in a tie, so a shoot-out was required. Blyth went through its five players and Jan Paul VanDorp and Murray Dale were the successful shooters. Nonkes had also let two goals in, so the shootout had to continue. Nick Brandon- Caldwell was successful in getting the winning goal in net for his team. The Storms were awarded one point for a tie and one point for winning the shoot-out. With eight points the Storms were in fourth place and earned a spot in the bronze medal game against Clinton Ajax at 6 p.m. Connor Prescott and Greg Roetcisoender did a great job covering the net for Blyth and earned a shutout for their hard work. Clinton played a strong first half and Blyth stood up stronger in the second half. Penalty shots were awarded to each team for handballs inside the crease, still neither team scored. The game ended in a tie, so a shootout was required. The pressure was high and both teams went through five shooters without getting a goal. Clinton’s sixth ball went in and that put the pressure on Blyth. Unfortunately the ball was kicked over the net. This meant Clinton won the Bronze medal. This was a real heart-breaking way to lose in a medal game. Coaches said the Storms should be proud of how well they played together as a team. They never lost a game. This team was made up of 16 of the many talented players from Blyth and area. Coaches Richard Roetcisoender, Mary Ann Drost and Joost VanDorp were very pleased with their team’s performance during the tournament. The Storms played their soccer games with skill, determination and heart showing a real love of the game, they said. The Storms even had a player injured during an activity between the game, but that player never gave up and after getting his foot stitched up, he came back and played three more games with his team. The Storms forwards were: Kathryn Peach, Madison Sjaarda, Derek deBoer, Greg Roetcisoender and Connor Prescott. The half-backs were: Morgan Bos, Emily Uyl, Murray Dale, Leendert VanDorp, JanPaul VanDorp and Micah Nonkes. The defence was: Jeanette Schramm, Sarah Steele, Nick Brandon-Caldwell, Zach Drost and Alec Lorentz. The Storms had three goalies to help out during the tournament Micah Nonkes, Connor Prescott and Greg Roetcisoender. On June 13 the Blyth PeeWee softball team played in Chepstow. The Blyth team enjoyed the strong pitching of Ty Sebastian and the big bat of Kayla Black. Sebastian went the distance striking out 9 batters while Black hit a homerun, scoring three runs, to break the game open. Tyler Stevenson and Tyler Black also had a strong game at bat going two for three. Chepstow proved to be no match for Blyth. The Peewees came home with an 11-1 victory. The following Sunday, June 17 Walkerton came to town wanting to revenge an earlier loss to Blyth. Big bats for the night belonged to Sebastian, with two round trippers, and Collin Whitfield also chipping in with one homer. The keen eyes of T. Black and Kirby Cook, who drew three and two walks respectively scoring five runs, along with the strong pitching of Cronin sent Walkerton home with a 12-7 loss. Unfortunately Blyth’s Kayla Black fractured her ankle sliding into second base and is on the DL for four weeks. The boys wish her a speedy recovery. On Friday, June 22 the team was on the road again to face an undefeated Wingham squad. The boys fought hard with great defence behind pitching of Sebastian. With Wingham up 2-0 by the end of the second inning Tyler Hallahan came through with a two-run double in the top of the third to tie the game. Wingham scored two more in the bottom of the third before Stevenson hit a single in the fourth inning then proceeded to steal his way around the bases scoring Blyth’s third run. Three hits and a walk produced three more runs for Wingham in the fifth. Blyth loaded the bases up in their last at bat but could not get the timely hit and lost 8-3. Sunday, June 24 saw Chepstow come to town. The PeeWees hosted the visitors by dishing up 13 hits, two homeruns and eight walks. Cronin and Stevenson were both strong hosts, each hitting homeruns and batting three for four. Hallahan, Whitfield and T. Black got in on the action with two hits each. There were great fielding plays by Lukas Witherspoon at second, Connor Prescott at third and Shawn Reinink in right field. Another strong contributor was a little man on the mound, Cook, who kept throwing the strikes at the plate keeping the batters off balance. The PeeWees served up 18 runs compared to Chepstow’s four to get the victory. With the win Blyth’s record for the season now stands at six wins and two losses.
