In 1948 for the first time, a
WOAA trophy came to Brussels.
The ladies’ softball team,
organized to play by Ken Ashton
beat out the Clifford Swing Skirts
that year to take the WOAA title.
“They beat us the year before
which made it even better,” said
Nora Stephenson, a member of the
team.
She and her sister Fran Bremner,
who also played, remember that the
ball games were quite popular with
local fans. “There were about 300 at
the championship game,” said
Stephenson.
“We had a great following, we
really did,” Bremner added.
Bremner played on the team
for about five years, while
Stephenson stayed on for an
amazing 20 years. “The team won
the championship again and I was
the only one of the originals still
playing,” she said.
Now the sisters are hoping to
bring as many of the team back for
Brussels Homecoming 2007 as
possible. The plan is to ride a float in
the Saturday parade.
They have contacted most of the
members of that 1948 team and have
received confirmation from the
majority that they would take
part.
One they haven’t been able to
locate is the bat boy David Kennedy,
son of The Brussels Post Kennedys.
“He was about six at the time and
was always at the games,” said
Bremner.
The sisters would like information
on where Kennedy might be so they
could try to contact him and invite
him to ride along with the team on
the float.
Members of the team were: Vera
Hastings (d), Donelda Willis (d),
Shirley Coleman, Pat (Anderson)
Hunking, Muriel Anderson,
Geraldine (Stretton) Bradshaw,
Frances (Shaw) Bremner, Ruth
(Jewell) McArter, Nora (Shaw)
Bremner, Jerry Stephenson, Isobel
Spier,Annette Campbell and Audrey
Anderson.
Coaching staff were: D.A. Rann,
Ken Ashton, Bob Campbell and Bill
Coleman.
And of course, bat boy, David
Kennedy.
Women bring back team for Homecoming
Whether it’s flowers, baking or
you just want to clean out your
garage, Brussels is offering a unique
way to sell your wares.
As part of Homecoming 20007,
there will be a car boot sale on
Saturday, July 28 from 7 a.m. until
10:30 a.m. During those hours,
vendors will be selling a variety of
items from the trunks, or boot, of
their cars.
Committee chairs Brian and
Sheila Prescott are now actively
pursuing vendors for the sale,
travelling to towns and villages in
the surrounding area to generate
interest.
“There will be many people in
town for the Homecoming
celebrations so it’s the perfect
opportunity for vendors and will also
be a fun activity that will help their
business,” said Sheila.
A British tradition, the first car
boot sale was held in September of
1980 in Kent. Wise vendors turn up
early to catch the early bird
shoppers.
The seller will pay a fee of $5 to
rent space. They can also put a table
on the sidewalk behind the vehicle,
the Prescotts said. Some downtown
merchants are also participating to
increase the variety available for
shoppers.
While the sales are reminiscent of
yard sales with people using them as
an opportunity to clear their own
homes, the Prescotts said it’s also a
great place for crafters and bakers.
“They can sell whatever they
wish, as long as it’s legal,” said
Sheila.
Vendors can arrive anytime before
7 a.m. but must clear off the street by
10:45 a.m. in time for the
parade.
Anyone interested in renting space
or wanting more information can
contact the Prescotts at 519-887-
6911.
Remembering glory days
Two Brussels women have been tracking down members of the 1948 WOAA championship
ladies softball team to take part in the Brussels Homecoming 2007 parade. One member Nora
Stephenson, left, and Fran Bremner haven’t been able to locate is bat boy David Kennedy.
They are asking anyone who might have information regarding him to contact them. (Bonnie
