School secretary Diana Dolmage performed the Heimlich
maneouvre to dislodge the loonie Brussels Public School
kindergarten Cade Patterson had swallowed at lunch. The
money, said his mom, had been meant to purchase ice
cream. Dolmage downplays the incident saying anyone
would have done the same, provided they knew how.
“Everyone should take first aid training,” she said. (Bonnie

THE EDITOR,
A big thank you to the residents of
Brussels from the North Huron
Community Foodshare for the
donation of food collected in a door-
to-door canvas.
The seven large bins of non-
perishable food collected will go a
long way in keeping our shelves
stocked over the summer months.
Our appreciation and thanks also
goes out to the Community Youth
Group for their enthusiasm and hard
work in collecting the food and to
Lori Pipe and Brent Kuepfer for
organizing and helping with the
canvas.
May God bless all of you for your
generosity.
Sincerely,
Pat Nolan, Chairperson
North Huron Community
Foodshare.

THE EDITOR,A lot of attention is being given tothe recent labour action by manyCommunity Living Associations in
Ontario; and justifiably so. A
disruption to the support that people
count on to lead full and meaningful
lives is truly regrettable.
While Wingham & District
Community Living Association is
staying apprised of the provincial
situation we are not currently
affected by the OPSEU and CUPE
led call to strike action.
WDCLA counts among itsgreatest assets, our direct servicestaff. We recognize the dedicationand commitment this group displays
everyday as they work to engage
people in their communities in
respectful and meaningful ways.
WDCLA, as a non-union
association, has been actively
engaged in the pay equity process
that has seen a move to align direct
service wages with provincial
counterparts in the health care and
social service fields. As an agency
we have been able to access moneythrough other funding avenues thathave been allocated to staff wages inan attempt to remain competitive.
WDCLA encourages anyone who
has questions regarding our agency
to contact our executive directors,
JoAnne Davis at 519-357-3562.
Sincerely,
Connie Goodall,
Co-ordinator of Public Education
and Community Strategies
Wingham & District Community
Living Association.
Putting your money where your
mouth is isn’t always a good
idea.
Six-year-old Kade Patterson, a
kindergarten student at Brussels
Public School, began choking during
lunch after putting a loonie in his
mouth.
When it became evident that this
was very serious, Kade was taken to
the school’s office. “By the time he
got there, he wasn’t breathing,” said
his mother Tammy.
School secretary Diana Dolmage,
in the words of principal John Carr,
jumped to the rescue and performed
the Heimlich maneouver. “What she
did was wonderful,” said Carr.
Tammy Patterson agrees.
“She is my hero. And I think
parents need to know that these
people have been trained to look
after our children.”
For Dolmage it was something
anyone would have done. “There
was quick thinking of everyone’s
part,” she said creditting those who
got the youngster to the office.
But she knows that in some cases
such speedy action wouldn’t be
enough. “First aid training is
something everyone needs to
have.”
The drama had little effect on
Kade whom staff continued to
observe through lunch, but was
outside playing at the next recess,
said his mom.
