The Blyth Festival Art Gallery is set to open an exciting program of exhibitions for their 2007 season. The shows will be presented in the Bainton Gallery, located beside the Blyth Festival box office and will run concurrently with the theatre season. The first show, Symbols 3, features the works of London artist/educator Ron Milton. “Three specific concerns continue to cycle in my imagery – nature, technology and history … I use creatures as symbolic metaphors similar to those found in religious works and Greek fables, in addition to European and North American native legends. I feel an affinity to the past, when visual communication dealt with issues, not simply exercises in the principles of design.” Milton’s work has received many awards and is represented in numerous public and private collections in Canada and internationally. His large-scale kinetic sculpture, watercolours and prints will be shown at the Blyth Festival Art Gallery, opening on Thursday, June 28 at 5 p.m. and continue until July 19. The public is invited to meet the artist and to celebrate the occasion with other art lovers in our community. The next show En Masse, features work by two Goderich-area women, Madeleine Roske and Irene Hartwick and runs from July 20 - Aug. 8. Roske’s oil paintings of cows in their natural setting reflect her fascination with these icons of Huron County, providing a nuanced mindscape to explore and ponder. Hartwick’s works of original abstract expressionism portray a variety of moods and excitement in vivid acrylic colours and textures. The last exhibition for the season is Phil Irish’s Scene Changes opening Aug. 10 and continuing until the end of the season. His oil paintings are about places with personal stories and for this exhibit, he will be using stories from the Blyth community. The Bainton Gallery is located in the Memorial Hall beside the Blyth Festival box office and is open to the public during Festival business hours. On guard! While several bugs were still being worked out at last Thursday’s dress rehearsal of Treasure Island at Blyth Public School, the swordplay was spot-on. Unfortunately, Connor Prescott, left, took a bit of a lump when the table he was thrown onto collapsed, but he returned to his character quickly. Josh Raynard, right, got the best of him in this exchange, but Prescott, defeated, had redemption in mind.
