AgricultureBrussels Livestock reportFed steers, heifers sell steady at saleTHE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 21, 2007. PAGE 13. Huron County at its June 6 meeting passed a motion to hand down its boundary bridges to lower- tier municipalities. The motion was brought forward from the committee of the whole meeting in May at which in a recorded vote on the Huron East councillors were opposed. Joe Seili and Bill Siemon also opposed the motion on Thursday. Huron East’s third representative Bernie MacLellan was absent. The majority of the boundary bridges are in Huron East. And while the motion will see the bridges either brought to county standards or accompanied by a mutually agreed upon one-time payment, Huron East councillors have been concerned. At an earlier Huron East council meeting, Seili expressed a feeling that with the responsibility of the bridges there should be funding to go along with it. *** Former Howick councillor Rosemary Rognvaldson has been appointed as a member of the board of health for the Huron County Health Unit for a period of three years. *** Council was told of a presenta- tion, which Bluewater councillor John Bezaire described as “extremely informational” that looked at the impact of poverty on health. Health unit staff continued with the presentation and focused on servies offered by the health unit and social services which address these concerns. *** The official opening of the new Wingham ambulance base is scheduled for June 19 with an open house from 2 p.m. - 7 p.m. The ribbon cutting ceremonies begin at 3 p.m. *** Material has been received regarding a funding application for automated external defibrillators from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. From discussions at the health, ambulance and social services committee a motion carried to submit an application. Councillor Neil Vincent of North Huron wondered when the results would be known. Manager of land ambulance services Dave Lew said he had received an e-mail that day saying they were in the process of making decisions and he expected an answer by the end of the month. *** Councillors supported a resolution being sent to Huron-Bruce MP Paul Steckle and MPP Carol Mitchell urging that the per diem to residents in long term care homes be increased to the promised $6,000 per resident in the fiscal year 2007. *** The county is donating a used decommissioned ambulance cube van to the Huron County Mutual Aid Association for use as a tow vehicle for the fire safety house. *** The lease with Epilepsy Huron- Perth-Bruce for the office at the Jacob Memorial Building has been extended to Dec. 31, 2008. *** The health unit accepted tenders for the mosquito identification and viral testing protion of the West Nile virus surveillance program for 2007. The contract was awarded to Cosray Nucleic Acid Research Labs Inc. in the amount of $15,552.32. References were supplied by the three applicants. Two references for Cosray Labs, the lowest of three applicants, were contacted. Perth County has used the labs services for two years, while Chatham Ken contracted Cosray last year. *** Bezaire congratulated staff on the re-design of the county website. “It’s really something special. It stands way above others.” *** Seili asked council to consider a hazardous waste depot for Huron East. “We never seem lucky enough to get one.” Warden Deb Shewfelt said the request would be taken under advisement. *** County councillors will do some strategic planning Sept. 18. *** A cheque for Ball’s Bridge was presented to Ashfield-Colborne- Wawanosh councillor Ben Van Diepenbeek and Central Huron councillor Bert Dykstra.
