Both boards recorded a success rate of 75 per cent among first-time writers in the applied stream, compared to a provincial average of 62 per cent. There is, however, some variation between schools within the Avon Maitland board. While St. Michael (Stratford) and St. Anne’s (Clinton) Catholic secondary schools recorded first- time writer success rates of 91 per cent and 90 per cent, respectively, the success rates in the Avon Maitland board’s nine high schools ranged from 80 per cent at Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton and 81 per cent in Mitchell to 89 per cent at Stratford Central and Listowel District secondary schools. “There are definitely some schools which are consistently doing well,” noted Herbert. He added the board continues to track what’s going right at the successful schools, in hopes ofapplying some “best practices”across the district.First-time writer success rates atother Avon Maitland schools were as follows: 83 per cent in Goderich, 82 per cent at Exeter South Huron, 88 per cent at St. Marys DCVI and Stratford Northwestern, and 85 per cent at F.E. Madill in Wingham. The OSSLT is administered in two 75-minute sessions, and Herbert says preparing students is accomplished through a combination of curriculum work in the years leading up to Grade 10, and a type of psychological preparation for the stress of the test. “There is definitely some of that (psychological preparation). Generally, the more prepared you feel, the more successful you are,” he said. This year, for the first time, a sample OSSLT was made available on the EQAO website. Parr praised this decision, adding “there’s nothing secret about it. At least there shouldn’t be anything secret about it.” He said the sample test, which has different wording than the real thing but “tests the same skills . . . makes it very easy for students and teachers to prepare.” It was this big... After a lengthy struggle at Radford’s Pond, six-year-old Mason Campbell reeled in a beautiful near-foot-long rainbow trout last weekend at the Father’s Day Fishing Derby. Helped out by Gord Campbell, left, and Tyler Stewart, right, the young man pulled in one of the first fish of the day. However, by the next time he tells the story, the fish may get bigger.
