The drone of overheard traffic was
nice music to hear on the weekend as
the Armstrong Aerodome took on
added activity. Over 70 visiting
planes and their occupants were
warmly welcomed by Jim, Leona
and family.
Did you hear the sounds of eggs
cracking on Sunday morning? Well it
was a lot of cracking as the good
weather and assurance of good food
had hundreds lining up to eat. A lot
of preparation goes into feeding the
throngs, so thanks to the firefighters
and their helpers for offering a very
nice way to meet and greet others
from the community every year.
As an added bonus the money they
realize from the meal is used for our
benefit, usually with the purchase of
equipment and supplies that makes
their role in community better for all.
Good work guys!
Have you taken a stroll near the
dam lately? Good things are
happening there. The plan is
unfolding and the parkland is very
nice. Thanks to the dreamers and
schemers in our midst who see
potential, and make the time and
effort to convince the rest of us that
it’s a good thing. Thanks to the
Optimist Club for bringing the ideas,
the hours and the enthusiasm to theother clubs and groups who now seethe beauty in the Maitland area. The red and white is slowlygrowing about the village as theHomecoming sneaks closer. Be partof the fun and let your excitementout as the days to Homecomingapproach.A good surprise is always a joy to
watch. Just to make you feel old I’ll
tell you that brother Bill and Pauline
(Smith-sister to Adam and Cora) are
married 40 years and their three
daughters did a marvelous job of
keeping them in the dark as family
and friends gathered last Saturday to
celebrate the Maritime wedding of
1967. In their card we entered the
quote “Life is like a roll of toilet
paper, the closer you get to the end,
the faster it goes.”
You can pop out to Ethel next
Sunday to see how the Grey
firefighters offer up their breakfast to
the hungry crowds. They’ll be glad
to see you.
Take care of yourself.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
On the weekend of June 8-10 the
Resident Student Supervisors
(Dons) of Renison College at the
University of Waterloo made their
annual retreat to Brussels at the
home of Jeff and Sara Newell.
The eight students came from all
parts of Ontario to spend a weekend
of recreation and team building.
The weekend was full of activities
like kayaking and canoeing in the
Mill Pond, Bocce, basketball,
magic shows, frisbee, barbecuing
and softball.
The students had a special treat
when Brussels Citizen of the Year,
Doug McArter, dropped by to
officially welcome them. The sports
facilities, open backyards and park
areas made for a great weekend that
concluded with a trip to Lake Huron
for a campfire on the beach. They
were so busy they didn’t have a
chance to enjoy the roller skating
and drive-in movie at the BMG
Arena or the Motocross in Walton.
The students couldn’t believe all
the activity in such a small town.
Most importantly, the Dons were
impressed with the warm welcome
they received from the residents and
commented on how everyone
waved and said hello.
Visiting were Cher Canonizado,
Robert and Stephen Prentice,
Shawn Tucker, Catherine
Cecchetto, Ripu Mangat, Kristin
Fox, Karen Sanderson and Scott
MacLellan.
There’s a little help out there for
anyone wanting to spruce up their
downtown buildings for
Homecoming.
Charles Hoy, chair of the Huron
East Heritage Committee said they
have $500 available for paint for
storefronts. The only stipulation is
that heritage colours be used.
Anyone wanting more
information can contact Hoy at 519-
887-8581.
