Just a few pitches after this one, this Thundercats pitcher
was yanked for a relief pitcher, shortly after his last pitch of
the game left the park, courtesy of one of the Canadians’
bats. The final score of the contest was 19-3 for the
Canadians at last weekend’s slowpitch tourney in Ethel.

Grandkids put on a show
Four generations
When Ruth Dougherty was “dragged’ to her great-grandchildren’s soccer game, who knew
she’d see all four of them find the back of the net in the first soccer game she’s ever watched?
A great first experience she called it. Maybe it’ll convince her to come out to some more
games. From left: Father Russell Nesbitt, great-grandmother Dougherty, grandson Wyatt
Carey, grandson Dalton Carey, grandmother Lena Nesbitt, granddaughter Mackenzie Nesbitt,
grandson Ryan Nesbitt and grandmother Shirley Stanway. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Most people would find it hard to
remember the first minor soccer
game they went to. Ruth Dougherty
won’t.
After waiting until her twilight
years to make her first appearance
at a soccer game, it could be
argued that maybe the Blyth resident
was simply waiting for the right
one.
Dougherty was “dragged” out on a
cold Tuesday evening on June 5 to
watch the Blyth U-11 Lightning take
on Goderich.
Three generations of family were
present to watch the fourth play
soccer in Blyth and it’s a good thing
they were.
Blyth topped Goderich by a score
of 5-1. Dougherty’s four
grandchildren each scored one of the
goals.
Wyatt Carey, Dalton Carey,
Mackenzie Nesbitt and Ryan Nesbitt
all found the back of the net on the
night of their great-grandmother’s
first soccer game. To round out the
generations, grandmothers Lena
Nesbitt and Shirley Stanway and
father Russell Nesbitt were all in
attendance.
Soccer is in the blood of the
family, the younger generations
anyway. Pulling up to the house, a
sign warns that only Manchester
United fans are welcome while all
four children play soccer amongst
themselves on the lawn.
However, a more perfect first
game, one could not imagine;
although, Dougherty said it could
have been a little warmer.
