President Debbie Bauer chaired the meeting which was hosted by the Dungannon Branch with the theme Improvement to Our Environment. She welcomed everyone and mentioned the interesting displays set up, new brochures and placemats. Marlene Archer presented Mrs. Bauer with the new volunteer pin from FWIO TEAM Conference 2006. Opening exercises and annual reports were received. Special guests bringing greetings included London Area president Anne Innis, who stated the curator’s workshop will be held at Thorndale on Tuesday, Aug. 7. The London Area Convention is Wednesday, Oct. 3 at Kirkton Community Centre. Thanks was extended to all members who donated articles to be sold at the Erland Lee Museum Home. Others bringing greetings wereHuron Perth District, DarleneHarding; Huron South, Lois Gill andPerth South, Susan Christie.An interesting historical societyreport was presented by Isabel Bissonnette, archivist who encouraged all to attend the ceremony to unveil a commemorative plaque in memory of J.H. (Herb) Neill, founder of the Huron County Museum on Sunday, June 10 at 2 p.m. at Wroxeter Cemetery. The 4-H report was presented by Pat Saundercock. Memberships are $60. There are 297 members and only 35 leaders. She stressed the great need for more leaders. There are two new life-skill projects this year, and 4-H has updated the agriculture clubs. There is a fundraising dinner and silent auction to be held Aug. 12 at the Seaforth Agriplex. Each year a cash donation is given to Friends of 4-H. Huron master gardener, Betsy Rowcliffe passed out information sheets regarding native plants and shrubs that attract butterflies as well as recipes for organic pest control. Information on heritage plants, old-fashioned roses, was quite interesting to all. There was a potluck noon luncheon after which a large selection of plants and miscellaneous items sold quickly. Musical entertainment by Darlene Vanderveen and Deb Siertsema of Blyth was followed. Guest speaker, Matt Pearson, chairman for the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation, a non- government organization since 1998whose purpose is to keep lakeshealthy, spoke on the environment,using a most interesting slide show.He stated climate change isemerging as one of the key issues facing humanity and it’s a global issue. It affects human health in such ways as water quality, water-borne diseases, reduced lake levels and extreme temperatures affect agriculture. What can people do? Stay informed, plant a variety of trees, carpool, ride bicycles, buy locally. This can make a difference. Area voting delegate Marlene Archer encouraged everyone to use cloth bags instead of the plastic grocery bags. All life members should receive a copy of Home and Country newsletter. In some way celebrate 110 years of WI. Ontario and Nova Scotia are twinned for 2007. An in memoriam service was led by Jean Fraser, assisted by Mabel Jacklin for two deceased members, Ivey Cloakey, Belgrave and Bev Fielder, Dungannon. The new slate of officers was installed by Anne Innis. Mabel Jacklin presented potted WI rose bushes to Anne Innis, Marlene Archer and outgoing president Debbie Bauer. Incoming president, Jean Fraser was welcomed. Courtesies were extended to all by Mabel Jacklin. The 2008 District annual meeting will be hosted by Maitland Branch on Monday, May 26.
