Brussels II U-8 soccer team was in
action last week and they didn’t
disappoint, with a 4-1 victory over
Elma Logan.
Devin Bachert came up big with a
three-goal performance, leaving
Delayna Smith to score the only
other Brussels goal.
Lorren Poland, Jack Pipe, Hudson
Smith and Leanne Exel all
contributed assists to the effort while
Dean Scarrow and Exel split the
time in net, allowing just one goal
between them.
Two of the Brussels teams took to
the field last week as well in U-8
soccer action, with Brussels II taking
on Brussels III.
Brussels II came out on top by a
score of 4-1. Brussels II received a
tremendous scoring performance
from Smith, who scored three goals.
Cody Harding picked up the slack,
scoring one goal.
Logan Kellington scored the lone
goal for Brussels III, putting it past
Scarrow in net.
Brussels U-8 Is are off to a good
start.
The team won their first game 6-5
against Elma II. Goals were scored
by Logan Kellington and Mitchell
Ward. The next game was a very
close loss to 2-1 to Elma I, Ward
scoring the lone goal.
Next the team played Elma IV and
Brussels won 5-4. Goals were scored
by Kellington, with assists going to
Ward, Brock Weber, Mackenzie
McNichol, Alexandra Martin and
Jamie Perrault.
The team lost its next game to
Brussels II 4-1. Logan Kellington
made the lone goal.
Goal tending duties were shared
by Alexandra Martin and Dylan
Prout.
The Blyth PeeWees are up and
running for another exciting season
of softball in the Western Ontario
Athletic Association.
On May 27 Wingham came to
town with a strong team. Wingham
pitcher, George Armstrong, threw a
strong game allowing only three hits
while striking out nine.
Throwing a great game for Blyth
was Adam Cronin allowing seven
hits over the seven innings. Crossing
the plate for Blyth were Ty
Sebastian, Kayla Black and Tyler
Black.
The three runs were not enough as
Wingham won 7-3.
The next night the team travelled
to Walkerton. There was strong
batting by Tyler Stevenson, three for
three; Connor Prescott, two for two
with a walk, and Tyler Hallahan, two
for three, helped put the runs across
the plate. Scoring for Blyth were
Tyler Stevenson, Black, Sebastian,
Cronin each with two runs and K.
Black with one. Sebastian pitched a
strong game striking out seven
batters to take the win 9-7.
Great fielding plays by Collin
Whitfield, Kirby Cook, Shawn
Reinink, and Tyler Hallahan helped
seal the win for Blyth.
On Sunday, June 3 Teeswater
arrived in town with hopes for a win,
but the PeeWees had other plans.
The PeeWees showed a strong team
effort with everyone reaching base at
least once.
Multiple hits by Cronin (three), T.
Black (two), Sebastian (two) and
Hallahan (two), helped
tremendously with the offensive part
of the game. Strong defence by
Whitfield on first, Cook on second,
Prescott on third, Stevenson at
shortstop, Reinink, K. Black,
Hallahan and Sebastian, in the
outfield, helped shut down the
Teeswater offence.
The pitching of Cronin and
catching of T. Black worked
strongly together for the 8-6 Blyth
win.
Coaches Phil, Pat and Paul are
extremely happy with the team’s
effort and progress so early in the
season.
PeeWees off to great start
The Blyth U-11 Lightning soccer
team played two games this week.
The first was the rained-out
rematch against Winham. Dalton
Carey started Blyth off with a pass
up to Trystan Weber who scored.
Wyatt Carey scored the next two
goals for the Lightning each time
beating the Wingham defense to the
ball. W. Carey then assisted with a
pass up to Megan Hoggart who
scored. Carey scored one final time
with Micayla Henry and Ryan
Nesbitt teaming up to assist.
Tyler Boven had good game in net
for the Lightning making several key
saves to keep Wingham scoreless.
The Lightning coasted to a 5 - 0
victory.
Blyth's second game was against
Seaforth. W. Carey dominated the
offence, scoring five times in the first
half. His first goal came with Julia
Tyler getting control of the ball in
her own end and starting up the field.
Tyler got the ball up to Braydon
Whitfield who continued into the
Seaforth end. Whitfield fed the ball
up to W. Carey who made sure of the
goal.
Whitfield also picked up to more
assists in the game. Megan Hoggart
assisted on W. Carey’s second goal.
Seaforth came back in the second
half easily getting around the
Lightning defenders to get one back.
Nesbitt responded scoring for
Blyth.
Seaforth was able to score twice
more as the Lightning defense
continued to struggle in their own
end and gave Tyler Boven little help
around the net. But Boven shutdown
the Seaforth offense for the rest of
the game. W. Carey scored one last
time as Whitfield and Carey went the
length of the field to score.
The Lightning won 7-3.
Clinton’s U-13 team travelled to
Blyth for a soccer game Thursday,
May 31. It was another warm night
for soccer, but both teams had a
great night on the field and played an
exciting game for the parents and
fans.
Blyth came out strong and scored
two goals on Clinton. Nadine Otten
booted the ball to Hunter Broda who
picked it up. Then Greg
Roetcisoender sent the ball into the
net to score the first goal. Zachary
Drost picked up the ball at the 18-
yard line, and shot it up the field.
Broda passed the ball over to
Roetcisoender for a quick chip into
the net.
Clinton was keen to get into the
game and they had a beautiful shot
on Blyth's goalkeeper Josh Raynard.
The ball shot past the tip of his
outstretched fingertips and into the
top shelf of the net.
Clinton came off the halftime
break with lots of energy and scored
right off the top with the ball making
a nice body bounce off a Clinton
player into the net.
Blyth’s Sheree Uyl worked hard to
get the ball up the field to teammate
Morgan Bos, who set it up with a
great pass to Roetcisoender. He shot
it into the corner pocket of the net,
scoring his third goal of the night.
This line switched things around
for the next goal and Roetcisoender
set up the ball for Bos for a nice little
tap into Clinton’s net. Blyth’s final
goal came when Uyl stole the ball
away from her opponents and caught
the Clinton goalie off guard. Uyl
took the opportunity and shot the
ball right into the middle of the net.
Blyth won 5-2.
Up to bat
It’s always fun to play ball, but the Mites didn’t risk a little
thing like a score dampening anyone’s spirits. It was Ethel
at home to Brussels in this contest played May 28, and a
host player keeps an eye on the ball. (Vicky Bremner photo)

The Ethel Mite legs it to the bag as the Brussels opponent
waits to make the play. The two teams met in recent action
in Ethel. (Vicky Bremner photo)
The Blyth Squirts softball team
put on an offensive clinic last week
against Ethel, scoring 20 runs and
giving up none over five innings.
Blyth’s pitcher, Dustin Clarke,
racked up 15 strikeouts against
Ethel, while despite their game-
long offensive surge, Ethel’s
Britney Rabek struck out seven
Blyth batters.

field last week in U-11 soccer action
with Blyth getting the better of
Brussels by a score of 4-2.
Both teams fought hard, but in the
