The Citizen, 2007-06-07, Page 7THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 7, 2007. PAGE 7.Morris-Turnberry councillor MarkBeaven will be getting a new hair cutthis summer, but it will be a littleshorter then usual. Beaven will behaving his head shaved, all in
support of Childcan, a charitable
organization that works with the
Oncology Department at the
Children’s Hospital of Western
Ontario in London.
“A young friend of mine
challenged me to help her in her
fundraising efforts for this
worthwhile cause, so I thought if a
16-year-old high school girl is
willing to go with the ‘bald’ look to
raise money, I should be able to as
well”.
The friend that Beaven refers to is
Stacie VanMiltenburg of Seaforth.
VanMiltenburg has raised close to
$2,000 recently and is having her
head shaved on Tuesday, June 5 at
St. Anne’s Secondary School in
Clinton.
“I cut my hair off four years ago
and donated it to Wigs For Kids”
explained VanMiltenburg. “This
time I figured I would go a little
further and raise money for Childcan
at the same time. Knowing that
Mark is always up for a little fun, I
figured I would get his help as well.”
Beaven, whose head will be shorn
in downtown Brussels on theevening of June 29 outside ofCinnamon Jim’s, has just started hisfundraising efforts. “We plan on having a little fun
with this.” states Beaven. “So far
everyone has been quite supportive
of the effort, and is looking forward
to me sporting the Kojak look.”
To help out in this cause, you can

in her memory.
Several refrigerator magnets and
pamphlets were received with
information about the threat of the
emerald ash borer. The spread of
these destructive pests must be
stopped by not moving firewood or
other types of wood from regulated
areas.
Information was received about
the Dowding Water Gardens at Mt.
Brydges, Ontario. A letter was
received from the Brussels, Morris
and Grey arena committee stating
that non-profit groups that wished to
rent the arena would be charged
$200.
Cathrine Campbell who had
attended a District No. 8 meeting in
Goderich on May 26 gave a report.
The new director for the area is Ann
Finlayson. The Ontario
Horticultural Association
Convention will be held in Owen
Sound on Aug. 10, 11 and 12. Mabel
Glanville offered to be the delegate
for the conference.
Agnes Ten Pas gave a report on
the many projects her husband,
Hank has been working on.
Money was collected from
businesses and individuals to
purchase material to build the new
flowerboxes and Mr. Ten Pas,
Wayne Lowe and Brian Prescott
volunteered their time to build them.
Planter boxes have been made for
each entrance of the village, two
planter boxes have been made for
the bridge and under the memorial
message sign.
A new horticulture park sign with
the Huron East logo on it will be
erected at the horticulture park on
the west side of Brussels.
It was decided that the new
flowerboxes would be planted
Thursday, May 31 at 6:30 p.m.
Debbie Seili, Cathrine Campbell,
Jane White, Nora Stephenson,
Mabel and Sharon Glanville, Jean
Bewley, Sheila Prescott, Leanne and
Leona Armstrong and Agnes Ten
Pas volunteered to help.
Gert Kellington and Debbie Seili
conducted several lucky draws for
various different plants throughout
the evening.
The next meeting will be on July
11 in the form of a Mystery Tour.
Phyllis Mitchell did her usual
excellent job of auctioning off the
numerous plants that were brought
in. A lunch of fruit bread and cheese
was served by Isabelle Wheeler and
Sarah Stephenson.
