With Rev. Pat Cook away at
conference the service at
Londesborough United Church on
Sunday, May 27 was conducted by
ladies of the United Church Women.
Greeters were Helen Dale and
Helen Lee. Ushering that morning
were Margaret Wright and Cheryl
Trewartha.
Congregants were treated to two
duets by the Snell sisters, Barb and
Bonnie. They sang Somebody
Bigger That You and I and Jesus and
Me.
UCW vice-president, Joan
Goodall, led the service. Scripture
readings were done by Mary Peel
and Betty Millar. The three passages
spoke of the pouring out of the Holy
Spirit on everyone so everyone can
minister and spread God’s message
through their lives.
This was the first Sunday of
Pentecost. It was a Pentecost when
the disciples received the Help of the
Holy Spirit. Cheryl Trewartha gave
the congregational prayers.
Barb Bosman talked with the
children before they went downstairs
for Sunday school. She drew an
analogy between the wind and the
coming of the Holy Spirit. Just as
one cannot see the wind, only feel it
and notice what it does, so, too, one
does not see the Holy Spirit. The
Spirit gives life to faith and makes
good things happen in our church
and lives.
Barb used pinwheels to
demonstrate her point. The larger
one had the words love, peace, hope
and faith on its wings. These are the
areas in which the Spirit works.
In place of a sermon, a skit was
performed. With Laura Scott as
reporter Kelly Keene, Bev Riley as
Dr. Steward and Lynda Horbanuik as
Dr. Ship, they were discussing the
unfortunate things which can occur
in a church whose stewardship
concentrates only on fundraising.
Suggestions were offered to make
stewardship a more rounded aspect
of church life, involving all areas of a
church life. Taking part were Joan
Whyte, Mary Peel, Brenda Konarski,
Jane Hoggart.
Explaining areas of stewardship in
the Londesborough church were
UCW representative Joan Goodall,
organist and choir director, Barb
Bosman, Presbytery rep, Betty
Archambault, board of stewards
chairperson, Doug Trewartha and a
long-time member and volunteer,
Bert Lyon.
Sunday, June 3 is promotion and
award Sunday and a clown (Brenda
Empey) will be a special guest.
An old-fashioned strawberry
social will follow the morning
service. You are asked to bring
sandwiches. Strawberry desserts will
be provided. Cost is adults, $5;
children, $3 and a family, $15.
Barb Bosman will practise with
the ladies choir at 10 a.m. on June 3.
The senior choir will gather for
practice at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June
10.
Move it along
A disguised George Townsend, with Sam Doughterty, in boat, left and Ian Hulley help move the
competitors along in the Londesborough Lions duck race held Sunday afternoon. There were
500 ducks in total. The winning duck was owned by Chris Cowan. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Tim Elliott came home from
hospital the end of last week. He may
need encouragement for some time
as he rehabilitates from his accident.
It was a busy time at the home of
Larry Mayberry last weekend. Kim
Mayberry and many family members
came home for a christening. Kim is
now the wife of Joe McCormack and
their daughter, Emily, was born on
Jan. 3. The baptism took place at the
Anglican Church in Blyth and was
witnessed by many Mayberrys and
McCormacks.
Kim and Joe live in Whitby,
Ontario. Kim was working at Earth
Rangers, an animal rescue service of
the Courtwright Centre and Joe is a
grip in the movie industry.
Marilyn Mayberry and daughter,
Sydney attended. Marilyn lives in
Cambridge. Health concerns
prevented Darryl and his family from
attending. That family resides in
Pennsylvania.
