HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-05-31, Page 3THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 31, 2007. PAGE 3. After three years of brainstorming, planning, fundraising and lots ofwork, the Blyth Youth Park is aboutto be officially opened. It’s been a challenging butinteresting and certainly a
worthwhile project, said volunteer
Susan Howson. This project has
been all about community. It is
because of this community spirit
(that sincere desire to see Blyth
flourish in all areas), that we are
soon to have a well planned, well
built Blyth Youth Park.
The idea of the park was initiated
by a group of interested and
concerned citizens and parents who
along with the support of North
Huron council, Blyth Public School
parents group, every Blyth church
and service group, most of the
business community (including
Blyth Festival, CHSS, St. Anne’s
and Madill schools and several
organizations) and over 100
individuals, have contributed
financially and in some instances
physically.
Even though the majority of those
supporting don't even have children
that will use the park, said Howson,
they still demonstrate that Blyth
Spirit. “One example of that spirit
happened this past winter when a
phone caller asked if the money we
had asked for was enough. They said
they’d like to give more.”When the park is officially openedon June 22, the youth will have thefirst group of ramps (with plans formore to follow) to try out their skillswith their skateboards and BMX
bikes. At the east end of the pad will
be a mini-basketball court for one-
on-one challenges. The park will
also be available for adults to use for
running and step aerobic exercising.
The committee acknowledges the
Threshers’ Association for its co-
operation. In support of this long
established event, the youth park
ramps, signs, etc. will be moved off
the pad during the reunion, so that
the area can be used for a food
booth.
To celebrate the official opening of
the youth park, a gala night for the
whole family is planned for Friday,
June 22 at the Blyth Thresher’s park.
The evening begins with a fish fry
from 6 - 8 p.m. (advance tickets
available at Luann’s and the General
Store), a silent and live auction in
Threshers’ Shed #3, puppet shows,
face painting, balloons, popcorn and
demonstrations on the pad. There
will be something for everyone.
The official opening will take
place at 7 p.m. featuring local
dignitaries, including councillor
Greg McClinchey as the master of
ceremonies.
Congratulations to Harold and
Adeline Campbell who celebrated
their 68th wedding anniversary on
May 27. Helping them celebrate,
besides the family members living in
and around Blyth, was Joan
Campbell from Turo, Nova Scotia.
Joan is visiting with other relatives
in the area.
Congratulations to Bodie and
Ollie Craig who celebrate their
anniversary on June 3.
Congratulations to Grant Sparling
and Albert Wasson who both
celebrate on June 5.
BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on May 27 were Tom Dunbar and
Arletta Hallahan. Ushering were
Emily Phillips and Karen Glousher.
Guest organist was Amanda
Swartzentruber.
Emily Phillips spoke about the
Two Minutes for Teens and a pocket
change was collected.
Guest speaker, Tom Dunbar
welcomed the whole congregation to
church.
The first hymn Eternal,
Unchanging…, was followed by the
prayer of confession repeated in
unison and the assurance of pardon.
The choir sang an anthem Heaven’s
Jubilee.
The children came to the front of
the church for their story and the
singing of The Lord’s Prayer with
the actions.
The joint needs assessment
committee explained what they have
been doing recently and what their
plans were for the future.
The last hymn was We Praise You
For the Sun.
A grace for the congregational
dinner was said and everyone was
invited downstairs for a luncheon
put on by the Stewards.
