The Citizen, 2007-05-31, Page 2The May meeting of the Melville
Guild was held in the church parlour
on Tuesday, May 22.
The Guild enjoyed hearing some
of the speeches from Brussels Public
School students. Austin Johnston,
Victoria Kellington, Hayden and
Sadie TenPas and Jacob McGavin
presented their winning speeches.
Mary Huether presented the students
with gifts.
Leona Armstrong gave an account
of the Presbyterian Synodical held in
Listowel on April 17 and 18.
Happy the Home when God is
There was sung. Mrs. Huether read a
poem God Created Mothers and the
scripture 1st Samuel I: 21-28 was
read by all.
Mrs. Huether read the meditation
and Mrs. Armstrong led in prayer.
Mrs. Armstrong read a story, The
Wonder of Trees.
Leona Armstrong presided over
the business. The minutes of the
April meeting were read and
approved. The correspondence
included plans for the Maitland bus
trip on Oct. 15 and a thank you card
from Jean Conley’s family for the
lunch following her funeral.
Jeanne Kirkby gave the treasurer’s
report and Leona Armstrong gave
the WMS report.
Plans were made for the executive
meeting to be held at the church on
June 13. The Guild is invited to
Ashfield on June 18.
There will be no Guild meeting in
June.
The roll was “What was special
about your Mother’s Day?” It was
answered by 12 members and one
visitor.
The Mizpah Benediction was
repeated by all to close the meeting.
Lunch was served by Mrs.
Huether and Mrs. Armstrong.
PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 31, 2007.
Hurrah, hurrah for days in May.
That statement can be followed by
many others that express the
sentiment. For me it means holidays,
reunions, bursting flowerbeds,
smiles on people as the sun warms
them and of course the growth and
changes in the fields all about us.
The resurrection story is so much
easier to believe in May as the bulbs
and the blossoms pop and the crops
sown last fall peek through and offer
a cover of green.
Brussels was a busy spot on
Saturday as goods were exchanged
in the annual, trade-your-treasures
day. Very few garages needed to be
used as the sun shone nicely, and in
my experience the good stuff to be
had, wasn’t found in most garages.
So I hope you have a few new things
to enjoy and as well moved your
goodies on to a new home.
London Conference of the United
Church of Canada held its annual
meeting last weekend at Ridgetown
College, now under the
administration of the University ofGuelph. Since I’ve been down thatway several new improvements wereobserved. A beautiful new buildingwas ready for our meetings and itwas very nice to have the gatheringsall in one spot. For those who wanted a reminderof school days, dorm rooms wereavailable. Ah yes, shared bathrooms
down the hall and the patter of large
feet as sleep came. It makes the term
good old days rather questionable.
Good business meetings, lively
music including two bands and the
gathering of members made for a
very nice gathering attended by
several members from our area.
Since Sandra Cable was in
Ridgetown, Valerie Watson led the
service for the United Church folks
and my gossip tells me it was very
well done.
Meanwhile many of the other
members had their thoughts on
feeding the multitudes. The dinner
and Sumsion show was held on
Sunday evening and the auditorium
was well filled, as visitors,
community folks and families
bought tickets to this venture.
Thank you to everyone for your
interest and support and hope you
enjoyed the evening of food, visits
and music.
Oh my, here comes June. Enjoy
the trip.
Bye now, Betty. G.W.

Dead Crows and Blue Jays
West Nile Virus is transmitted to birds and humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.
Symptoms in birds include convulsions, tremors, head tilt, wing droop, and paralysis.
Huron County residents are urged to report all dead Crows and Blue Jays from now until
the first of October. These species are particularly sensitive to West Nile Virus and are the
only ones that may be picked up by the Health Unit for testing. Report dead Crows and
Blue Jays to the Huron County Health Unit at 519-482-3416 Ext. 2001, or if calling long
distance, 1-877-837-6143 Ext. 2001.
Large birds of other species found dead or when several smaller birds die in one spot may
warrant testing for avian influenza. This is not done through the Health Unit. Please call the
Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre at 1-866-673-4781 to inquire about avian
influenza testing.
Dead birds not being picked up should be discarded in the following manner:
• using gloves or a shovel, double bag the bird in plastic bags
• do not touch dead birds with bare hands;
• place the bagged bird out with regular household garbage; and
• wash hands thoroughly.
To find out more, visit www.huroncounty.ca or call the Huron County Health Unit at 519-
482-3416 Ext. 2001 or if calling long distance, dial 1-877-837-6143 Ext. 2001.
