The Blyth Festival has announced
the upcoming launch of the Ontario
Open Country Singing Contest
taking place the weekend of June 9
and 10, in Blyth.
Formerly held just down the road
in Wingham the competition finds a
new home in Blyth Memorial Hall, a
stage that has been graced by such
Canadian country greats as Paul
Brant, George Canyon, Blue Rodeo,
and Michelle Wright.
The competition gets underway at
11 a.m. on Saturday, June 9, with
singers performing in the first
rounds of each of of the three
classes. The singers will be
evaluated by a panel of highly-
experienced judges from Ontario’s
country music scene, who will
decide which singers will compete
in the finals, to be held on Sunday,
June 10 beginning at 1 p.m.
There will be cash prizes for first,
second and third place winners in
the open classes, as well as for the
top five in the 18 and under and, 12
and under classes.
Adult admission is $12 on
Saturday and $15 on Sunday and
weekend passes are selling fast at
only $20 for unlimited access.
But this competition is more than
great entertainment at an excellent
price.
“Not only does the contest give us
a chance to showcase quality
country music talent, it also
encourages the growth of local
artists. This will be the first time
many of these singers have had the
opportunity to perform on a
professional stage,” says artistic
director Eric Coates.
And with former winners
including country singing icons,
Amanda Wilkinson and Beverly
Mahood, the competition promises
to be a fierce one, among many
talented singers from across Ontario,
some coming from as far as
Timmins and Kapuskasing.

Are you a serious art hobbyist, an
amateur crafter, a professional
artisan or recognized visual artist?
Do you wish you had more exposure
to the local community? Are you
looking for a career breakthrough, or
maybe just a little recognition from
the neighbours?
Area residents are invited to
submit one or two pieces in any
media for the Blyth Festival Art
Gallery Community Show. This is
an annual exhibition and features the
work of dozens of Huron County
professional and hobby artists.
The work is accepted on the
morning of Saturday, June 2, and the
show opens the same evening in the
Bainton Gallery, situated in the
Blyth Memorial Hall beside the
Festival box office.
Included among the pieces on
exhibit will be a wide range of
media, from oil paintings and
acrylics to photography, ceramics,
and glass.
Artists are asked to bring their
works to the gallery between 9 a.m.
and noon. Two-dimensional pieces
must be framed or mounted suitable
for hanging. A nominal fee of $5 per
piece is charged.
Parties interested in buying a work
of art will be directed to the artist
and no commission will be charged.
All work must remain in the gallery
for the length of the show and must
be picked up on June 23.
Members of the public are invited
to meet the artists and join in the
festivities with family and friends at
the official opening reception on
Saturday, June 2 at 7 p.m.
Refreshments will be served.
The Bainton Gallery is open
during Blyth Festival box office
business hours.
