The branch celebrated 85 years with guests, entertainment and loads of cake. Tulips graced the tables and three long-time members were in atten- dance to cut the cake. They were Bernice Anderson, Ruth Jardin, and Mildred Lawlor. President Erma Cartwright of Auburn did a great job chairing thespecial meeting and everyone wenthome with a plant for their gardenand a smile on their face.At the Ontario Federation ofBroomball Banquet in Orangevilleheld recently, StephanieArchambault received the CentralWest Ontario, Female JuvenilePlayer of the Year award. She plays for both the Blyth Rebels and Seaforth Assassins. Stephanie Archambault and grandmother Joan Dougherty, will be celebrating their birthdays on May 16. Stephanie will be 18 and Joan will be celebrating her 75th birthday. I attended the Auburn Horticultural Society plant auction this past week and what a great turnout they had. Every chair was full and the hall was lined to over- flowing with plants to be auctionedoff. Everyone did an exceptional job. Now we get to sit back and watchthe group make the village beautifulfor another year. I especially enjoyedwatching the young people help out.This is what makes our small com-munities the best place to live.And on the topic of plant auctions,the Dungannon Women’s Institute is inviting everyone to their plant auc- tion this Saturday, May 26, at my house, 37229 Dungannon Rd., for a10 a.m. start and bring your lawnchairs. We are just east of Brindley’sAuction, and I will have the cof-feepot on.We are still looking for donationsof plants, (especially the new andunusual) and any garden-relateditems. Please drop them off ahead(with identification information attached please) or give me a call to arrange for pick-up. Carrying the flag Vic Carson from Milton holds his club’s flag as he and other members of the Airstream club pulled into the Blyth camp- grounds for a spring rally this weekend. Neil Vincent, reeve of North Huron brought greetings to the travellers on Friday evening. The weekend was spent in a number of activities from bingo to flea markets. President Erma Cartwright wel- comed around 50 members and guests. The Ode and Mary Stewart Collect were repeated in unison and O Canada was sung, followed by the WI grace. A special cake, made and decorated by Carol McDowell, was cut by Mildred Lawlor, Bernice Anderson and Ruth Jardin. Cake and ice cream, fruit, biscuits, cheese and beverages were there for every- one’s enjoyment. Tom and Tammy each sang a solo. They are Teresa Roetcisoender’s grandchildren. Happy birthday was sung to Lois Elliott on the occasion of her 80th birthday. Betty Achambault read the minutes of the first meeting when the WI was organized in Auburn. There was lots of activity then. Erma Cartwright introduced Debbie Bauer, president of the Huron West District, and she wel- comed the branches. Looking back was the beginning and looking forward is the work ahead. In 1949 there were 30,000 WI members, different than today. There will be change and members need to think If it is to be, it’s up to me. The work is not done. She said There will be another 85 years. The WI will be selling tickets on a quilt for cancer at the Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion in Blyth in September. Gwen Bidwell introduced Emma Franken from the Food Advisory Committee. Canada Food Guide sheets were handed out to all. She demonstrated making a salad – greens, 1 cup tomato pieces, 1 cup cooked ham or tuna. Mix 3 tbsp mayonnaise mixed with 1 tbsp lemon juice and pour over the other ingredients. This with one slice of bread and one glass of milk makes a good lunch. Ruth Jardin gave a reading, Election. Mrs. Cartwright gave a reading, Learning The World in One Room. Door prizes were given out and everyone received a bell plant.
