Celebrating 65 years of service to
Western Ontario is the objective for
the WOAA 65th anniversary brunch
scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Sunday,
June 24 at the Knights of Columbus
Hall in Wingham.
In addition to recognizing the many
years of sporting service to more than
60 communities in Western Ontario,
the brunch will include an
announcement of the pledge
achievement to date for the current
capital campaign - Building For Our
Future.
The brunch itself will have a
fundraising component for the
campaign, featuring both live and
silent auctions for a variety of items.
Collectibles include National
Hockey League players' autographed
jerseys, notably from the potential
Stanley Cup Champion Ottawa
Senators, as well as Toronto Maple
Leafs captain Mats Sundin.
A unique auction item will be a
one-year lease on a six-person hot
tub, courtesy Dar-Lyn Pools and spas
in Kincardine and Owen Sound.
As well, a raffle is being
conducted for an autographed print
from the Toronto Maple Leafs 1967
Stanley Cup Champions reunion held
this spring, featuring signatures of
Bob Baun, Johnny Bower, Ron Ellis,
Goderich’s own Larry Jeffrey, “Red”
Kelly and Frank Mahovlich as well as
Jean Beliveau and Darryl Sittler.
All funds raised go towards
construction of the new WOAA
Headquarters for the minor softball
and hockey organization. Tickets for
the brunch are $25. For details or to
donate auction items, contact Linda
Espensen at the WOAA office at 519-

Another tie for U-15 boys
It was a cool spring night, which
meant the players and fans sure
didn’t get overheated as the Blyth U-
15 boys soccer team played the
second game of the season. Blyth
hosted this game at the Sparling’s
field against Clinton II, on
Wednesday, May 16.
Matt Steele made a nice kick up
the field towards Clinton’s net, but
the ball hit the crossbar. Clinton
picked up the ball and Blyth’s Jessie
Pot was able to take the ball away
from his opponents and score the
first goal of the game.
Ten minutes later Clinton scored
to tie up the game.
Thirty minutes into the game,
Brandon Shaff and Steele passed the
ball up the field and Brent Drost
picked it up to score.
Clinton scored soon after the half-
time break.
Blyth’s Jacob Nonkes got a
yellow card after he knocked down
his opponent on his quest for a
goal.
Clinton was able to score two
more goals.
Blyth didn’t give up on the game,
even when they were down by two
goals. Pot stole the ball away from
his opponents to score. Austin
Sjaarda made a nice pass across the
field and Drost headed the ball right
into Clinton’s net to tie it. Shaff took
the corner kick and Pot scored for
his third goal of the night.
In the last minutes of the game
Clinton got a corner kick.
Unfortunately Blyth’s goalkeeper
Jacob VanDorp was unable to move
around to stop the ball as he was
boxed in one spot by his opponents.
The game ended in a 5-5 tie.
This game exhibited some great
soccer skills demonstrated by both
teams. This is the second game to
end in a tie for Blyth. Their next
match is against the undefeated St.
Columban U-15 team.
7 1/2 tables in play
at Cranbrook euchre
Another Thursday, May 17,
comes along and the Blyth
Lightning U-13s hosted the Seaforth
co-ed team.
The first half of the game was
very evenly played. Both teams
dribbled the soccer ball up and
down the pitch making some
great plays and stops on their
opponents.
Blyth and Seaforth teams were
able to take a few shots at the net
and Seaforth was lucky enough to
get one ball into Blyth’s net to take
the lead.
Seaforth scored a beautiful goal
into the top corner of Blyth’s net.
With only a few minutes left in the
game Seaforth sealed their lead and
scored the final goal of the night.
Connor Prescott and Micah
Nonkes did a great job covering the
net for Blyth.
Seaforth’s defensive line shut
down Blyth every time they made
plays into their end.
