THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 10, 2007. PAGE 23.
Last month when the Huron
Camera Club sent out a challenge to
capture the beauty of the world at
last light, they hadn’t dreamed that
the response would be so great.
On Saturday, May 5, the gracious
staff at the Goderich Public Library
turned a deaf ear toward the Reading
Room as more than 70 people
gathered to celebrate the opening
gala of the Last Light Photo Contest
and Sale.
“We weren’t sure what to expect
and it went better than we could
have imagined,” said HCC member
Jenna Ujiye. “Sarah would have
been amazed by some of the photos
that came in.”
Close to 200 submissions were
made to the contest, a number that
slightly intimidated the contest
judges who had the unenviable task
of choosing just one photo to take
the top prize.
Arriving from Winnipeg, MB,
former Brussels resident Ashley
Gropp’s vivid shot of a river
landscape won over all three judges
and took the $250 prize donated by
The Goderich Signal-Star.
“I think we were overwhelmed by
the response from the community,
supporters and how it all came
together,” said Community Living -
Central Huron executive director
Rosemary Foran, who acted as one
of the contest judges. “From our
perspective, it was great exposure.
May is Community Living Month
and what a perfect time for us to
have this kind of event.”
The HCC, in partnership with
Community Living, created the
contest in memory of one of the club
founding members, Sarah Mann.
Twenty-three-year-old Mann was
killed as the result of a two-vehicle
collision in July 2006, but the impact
she made on her family, friends and
colleagues has been made evident by
their ongoing tribute to her life and
memory.
“We just keep thinking how
pleased Sarah would be and that
makes us happy,” said Lucknow
resident Lynne Mann, Sarah’s
mother. “I think that that’s the way
our friends and family feel too, just
knowing how thrilled she would
have been at the thought that a show
was held in her memory like that.”
All of the photos submitted to the
contest will be on display at the
Library until May 19, when a tally ofviewers’ choice ballots will decidewho will walk away with a FujiFinePix camera donated byCarman’s Foto Source in Goderich. All photos are up for grabs as part ofthe silent auction benefiting
Community Living.
“Over the next two weeks we hope
that people come out and put a ballot
in the box for viewers’ choice and
make a bid in the silent auction,”
said Foran.
“For a subject like sunsets, you
would think that they would be
similar, but each and every one was
so different. That’s what we couldn’t
get over,” added Mann. “It showed
that you can take a sunset photo
every day and each one has its own
beauty.”
The Huron Camera Club would
like to thank everyone who attendedthe show opening, as well as thegenerous supporters from Carman’sFoto Source, The Goderich Signal-Star, Community Living – CentralHuron, and the Goderich PublicLibrary.
“We really owe a debt of gratitude
to everyone who supported us with
this,” said Ujiye. “With particular
thanks to the Library staff for
donating their space so that we could
showcase these exceptional photos
in such a beautiful building.”
