The Citizen, 2007-05-10, Page 21Habitat for Humanity Huron
County (HFH HC) has been busy on
a number of fronts.
The 2007-2008 board of directors
has been elected after the annual
general meeting was held in Clinton.
The board, along with members of
Habitat’s committees, are committed
to a busy year ahead. The goal is to
build the next Habitat house in
Hensall. The lot has been selected as
the result of a donation by the
Kinsmen Club of Hensall and
District. The partner family has been
selected and building should begin
later in May.
In addition, the group plans a
number of fundraising activities to
support the Hensall build and to
continue to build additional houses
in Huron County.
HFH HC has also announced that
a newly-designed website has been
unveiled and is now in operation.
Many improvements to the site have
been made and still more are
planned.
People interested in learning about
HFH HC are urged to check out the
site for extensive information about
Habitat, how it works, and how to
get involved in the Huron County
affiliate.
A number of Habitat’s committees
need additional volunteers.
Descriptions of the various
committees can be found on the
newly designed website at:
http://www.habitathuroncounty.ca or
by contacting Habitat for Humanity
Huron County, Box 68, Hensall, ON

The major fundraiser for Habitat is
the annual Walk for Hope being held
this year on Saturday, June 16 in
Exeter. The route will be the
MacNaughton-Morrison Trail and
will begin at 9 a.m. in MacNaughton
Park.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-
profit, independent housing program
made up of local affiliates that are
locally managed. Habitat for
Humanity Huron County is entirely
operated by volunteers. Habitatprovides a “hand up, not a hand out”by selling homes to qualifiedfamilies through “sweat equity”, noprofit builds and no interestmortgages. Each local affiliate must meet the strict guidelines of Habitat forHumanity Canada. Friends of Hullett
Canoe Day at Hullett Marsh takes
place Saturday, May 12, presented
by the Friends of Hullett. Join us for
a guided canoe tour of the Bluebill
Pool.
We will be viewing ducks, marsh
and shorebirds, songbirds, muskrat,
beaver, and deer. Plant species can
be studied as well as dragonflies,
butterflies and turtles.
Enjoy the day stroking silently
through the clear blue water at
Hullett.
We will be meeting at the Bluebill
Pool boat launch, just off the Main
Viewing Stand, 40905 Summerhill
Road at 9 a.m. From there we will
set off on a canoeing adventure into
the extraordinary marsh habitat at
the Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area.
Make sure to bring your canoe,
appropriate attire for the weather,
and bug repellent. Water levels range
from knee deep to three metres
(approximately 9'), so plan
accordingly.
Bird species will be the order of
the day, as examples of waterfowl,
marsh bird, shore bird and songbird
types can also be scrutinized by
keen-eyed observers.
Highlighting this grouping is the
sandhill crane, a wading bird that
stands four feet tall and has a
wingspan of over six feet. A few of
these majestic birds can be spotted
over the marsh and fields of Hullett.
Other species of note that may be
on display on this day are: wood
duck, greater yellowlegs, great blue
heron, plus other species of ducks,
geese, sandpipers and herons. Add to
this a stunning array of songbirds,
including three different varieties of
swallow, plus wrens, warblers,
sparrows, and the whistling song of
the eastern meadowlark.
Bird watchers won’t want to miss
this splendid assortment of
‘goodies’.
In addition to birds, the marsh is
alive with the sights and sounds of
beaver, muskrat, groundhog and
deer. Plus there’s more! Dragonflies
and butterflies can be seen in and
around the vegetation of the marsh.
Both emergent and submergent
plants can also be studied.

other events at the marsh, check our
