registered for the 60th annual
meeting of the Southwestern Ontario
Women’s Missionary Society. It was
held in Knox Presbyterian Church,
Listowel on Tuesday and
Wednesday, April 17 and 18. The
theme was Honour the Past,
Celebrate the Present, Challenge the
Future.
While the executive was meeting,
other members enjoyed a tour of
Christ Anglican Church and Spinrite
wool store.
On Tuesday afternoon the
Synodical president, Pauline
Lindsay, St. Thomas, welcomed
everyone.
Each session began with hymn-
sing, led by Ethel Corry and Christa
Nauta, Listowel, accompanied by
Eunice Bisset, Goderich.
Greetings were brought by
Bernice Richards president of
Huron-Perth Presbyterial, Ethel
Corry, Listowel WMS groups and
Rev. John Zondag, minister of the
Listowel church.
The worship service and In
Memoriam were conducted by
Bruce-Grey Presbyterial.
Following the nutrition break,
provided by Mitchell and Monkton
groups, Wilma Welsh gave a history
of the Women’s Missionary Society
from its beginning as the Foreign
Mission Society, to the present day.
In 1884 a monthly mission letter was
sent out. It became the Glad Tidings
and a subscription cost 50 cents,
then $1, then $5 and now is $12.
She thanked the societies for the
knitted vests, caps, small afghans
which have been sent to several
countries. Large afghans can be sent
to Evangel Hall, etc.
Margaret McGillivray said that
when she was in Taiwan, she was
impressed with the way the latest
technology is being used in the
health system in that country.
Mary Dougall, Exeter, explained
the needs of Camp Kintail. The new
director there is Greg Walsh, who is
very experienced in the Scout
program. The new water system
opens July 1. A new kitchen
manager is still needed.
Trish Brown recommended a few
books available from the
Presbyterian Bookroom in Toronto.
On Tuesday evening, brief
remarks were made by various
dignitaries: Rev. James Stewart,
Milverton, moderator of Presbytery,
Mr. Ed Hollinger, mayor of the
Municipality of North Perth, the

The Brussels United ChurchWomen held its May meeting in theform of a potluck supper at the
church.
With over 30 people in attendance
and various foods everyone seemed
to enjoy themselves. Rene
Richmond was in charge of the
program.
The group was privileged to have
four school children give their
speeches. Sadie TenPas spoke on
slang phrases, Haden TenPas spoke
on Meet The Teacher Night,
Madison Sjaarda spoke on Rules,
Rules, Rules, and Jacob McGavin
spoke on Global Warming and
Making a Difference.
This Is The Day was sung to open
the devotions.
Sandra Gable, student minister in
training, read the scripture from
John 2: 1-8. This describes Jesus’
first miracle, changing water into
wine.
Jesus and his mother Mary were at
a wedding and the host was running
out of wine. Mary asked Jesus to do
something about the situation and
Jesus told Mary “My time has not
yet come”.
Ms Gable discussed therelationship between Mary andJesus at that time. She then gave a
reading, A Prayer to be Freed from
Tizzies from the book Out of the
Ordinary and closed with the
reading, When You Thought I
Wasn’t Looking.
Give us Laughter was sung with
Betty Campbell at the piano.
Doris Foster won the jar of
candies, guessing the correct
number.
Nelva Scott gave two notices, one
for the Westminster Weekend and
the other the summer event.
The applications will be in the
office.
The UCW has been asked to
conduct the June 10 service.
The next meeting, June 5, will be
held at Maple Villa at noon with a
light potluck luncheon, followed by
a short devotional and business.
Rene Richmond with the help of
others will make flower
arrangements in vases and these will
then be taken to the shut-ins that
afternoon.
The meeting closed with the
UCW Benediction.
