Huron East council has found
themselves with $100,000 more than
they know what to do with.
With a surplus from policing
costs, council proposed to apply
the $100,000 to their building
reserve, with a priority on
the upcoming Brussels Library
project.
With 2007 depleting a lot of
Huron East’s reserve funds, there
were several thoughts on where this
money should go before a final
decision was reached.
With the construction on the
Library approaching quickly; clerk-
administrator Jack McLachlan said
council will have architect's
drawings by the end of the year.
Several councillors thought
allocating this money to the building
reserve was a good move.
McLachlan and mayor Joe Seili
defended the move, especially in
light of a recent financial
commitment by Morris-Turnberry to
contribute to the Brussels Library
construction.
“We did make a commitment
to Huron County that we would
do something with that
library. We’ve gone to Morris-
Turnberry and they’ve now
committed it to their budget,” said
McLachlan.
“We should at least commit a
similar amount as Morris-
Turnberry.”
Deputy-mayor Bernie MacLellan
agreed with McLachlan, saying that
the money can always be removed
and allocated somewhere else, but
the Library is something they’re
already committed to.
“We know we’re going to put
money into the Library. It’s a project
that will happen,” he said.
Councillor David Blaney agreed,
saying money that is allocated
immediately has a tendency to
stay in the municipality’s
account longer than general usage
funds.
“If you name the funds, council
knows they had a specific use for it
in mind. I don’t think there’s
anything wrong with putting this
money in the building reserve,” he
said.
“It can always be changed, but
money that isn’t labeled has a
tendency to disappear quicker.”
Councillor Joe Steffler also spoke
in favour of the allocation of the
surplus to the building reserve.
Although he said he isn’t specific on
the money going to the Library, he
is happy as long as it goes to
buildings.
Seili then reminded the
councillors that they recently
finished a building study on
the municipality with a bottom
line price-tag of well over $1
million.
Councillor Bill Siemon disagreed
with the move at first, bringing to
council’s attention that there is just
$10,000 in roads reserves, not
enough for any kind of major
work.
Roads were the other major
place councillors thought the
money should go, but in the end, the
vote approved the funds going into
the building reserve by a show of
seven hands for to four hands
against.
Don’t you just want to whistle and
sing on these first few sunny days of
spring? The light and brightness of
the May days seem to put an extra
spring in the step.
Enjoy!
This is Nurse’s Week. It’s your
time to tell one of the nurses in your
life that they are appreciated.
Nursing has changed over the years
to include many roles that are no
longer bedside nursing but the care
and concern for the health and safety
of the public remains the goal.
So if you see one of the nurses that
have helped you over the years – tell
her you’re really glad that she’s a
nurse.
It’s not a stretch to see why this is
also Palliative Care Week. Nurses
supporting families and co-
ordinating care help volunteers in
the palliative/hospice role.
Fundraising for Huron is going on
this week so if you see a dove on an
envelope – open it and respond, for it
is nice to have a choice when we
plan for our death.
Congratulations to Ashley Groppwho took first place at the Last Lightphoto contest in Goderich. Bobcaygeon is just fine this week.We took a little tour to check onbrother Bob and Barb. Theirretirement spot on the shores of Pigeon Lake just by Big Bob Baysuits them just fine.
