The re-introduction of the black
and white OPP cruisers is a key
component of the OPP’s traffic
strategy to make motorists more
aware of the need to drive safely.
The new cruisers are distinctive and,
along with high visibility roof lights
and vehicle markings, will make the
OPP patrol vehicles instantly
recognizable.
Being instantly recognizable in
itself, however, will not create safer
roads for the communities, said
Const. Jeff Walraven. The cruisers
will be highly visible and will
actively contribute to reducing death
and injury on the roads. During a
traffic stop, officers will have the
ability to influence future driving
behaviour, to educate motorists and
as a result achieve safer roads.
The new black and white will
assist Huron officers in conducting
their traffic safety initiative, which
is a proactive, sustainable approach
to traffic safety directed at high-risk
behaviors. Occupant restraint,
impaired driving and aggressive
driving behaviours represent the
major causal factors in fatal and
serious injury collisions. The focus
of the program is to reduce injuries
and save lives on Huron's highways
and roads.

The first meeting of the Huron
County Sheep Club (South) was
held at Florence and Don Pullen’s,
on April 23.
Mrs. Pullen let the members go
into the hayloft section of the barn.
Then they played a game, led by
youth leader Nicole Moore, in which
the skittle colours they chose
represented questions about
themselves.
Then they talked about what age
animals should be so they aren’t
oversized for the show. They also
talked about what the sizes should be
by the first show the Bayfield Fair
and last show, the Seaforth Fall Fair.
Then they put on plastic boots and
were shown the ram pens. They
talked a bit about the rams. Then
Florence showed them the creep
areas, which are pens with small
entrances that only baby lambs can
get through to eat their special lamb
ration, without bigger sheep in their
way. They returned to the house for
the rest of the meeting.
They elected the 4-H council for
this year’s club. The results were:
president, Brandon Coleman; vice-
president, Frasier Falconer;
secretary, Amber Brodie and press
reporter, Zach Drost. They were
given sheets on their project subject,
Maintenance and Housing, and new
members were handed a judging
hand book and 4-H Member Lives
Here signs. They got 4-H project
signs, then filled out information
sheets.
The next meeting is on May 23 at
Deb and Les Falconers’.
Anyone interested in joining the
sheep club, can still do so. It’s not
too late to join the club. Contact
leaders Florence Pullen or Deb
Falconer as soon as possible.
The quote of Carl Gower of
Centralia for cutting grass on
roadsides was accepted by Morris-
Turnberry councillors at their April
17 meeting.
The cost for two rounds of cutting
in June and one to the fenceline in
September was for a total of
$26,947.90 plus taxes, up from
$23,448.64 in 2005 and 2006.
“We’ve had nothing but
compliments since he’s been on
board,” said Barry O’Kraftka, public
works co-ordinator. Asked if the
township might save money by
having its owns staff and equipment
do the work, O’Kraftka said the the
township’s equipment is not the right
type to do the job.

Council also accepted the tender
of Da Lee Dust Control to supply
35 per cent calcium chloride
dust suppressant at $260.57 per
ton.
Morris-Turnberry joined North
Huron, Howick and Huron Kinloss
to jointly tender for 1480 tons of the
suppressant.

A grant of $100 was approved for
the Huron County Farm and Home
Safety Association.

Councillors approved a bylaw
allowing the sale of a lane in Lower
Town, Wingham to James Ritchie,
an adjacent landowner. Mayor
Dorothy Kelly pointed out there is a
well in the middle of this lane and it
was in the municipality’s interests to
close the lane and sell it.
Cards for cancer
With proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society, card
enthusiasts made the trip out to the Brussels Library for
supper and dessert followed by an evening of cards. The
evening hosted, by Majestic Women’s Institute, boasted a
full house of card players and diners alike. (Shawn Loughlin
