By Reba Jefferson On Thursday, April 26 the Wawanosh Gardening Club went to Belgrave Co-op to listen to a gardening specialist, Nancy McPhee. She spoke about container gardening and its many benefits. To begin the program she talked about choosing the right container. There are many containers to choose from, such as plastic, cement and clay. The one thing that all containers must have is good drainage. This can be done by drilling holes in the bottom. Ms. McPhee demonstrated how to make good soil mixtures and gave examples of fertilizers to use. She said when planting, colourful is the way to go. Do not worry about which colours go together as it will always look wonderful. The members learned that mixing herbs with flowers both looks and smells great. Container gardens can be placed in a boring part of a garden, along the deck of a house, and in the shady spots. Hanging pots should be placed at eye level so everyone can see them. Hanging pots can come in a variety of materials. Refreshments were enjoyed by the group. The club also had a chance to look at the interesting items in the gardening centre such as fountains, pots, plants, gardening accessories and much more. There were 10 1/2 tables of shoot in play on Friday, April 27 in the Belgrave Community Centre. The winners were: high pink card, Louise Bosman; second high pink card, Kay McCormick; most shoots, Freda Scott; high white card, Gord Bosman; second high white, Ron Taylor; most shoots, Mary Wallace. The next shoot is Friday, May 11 at 1:30 p.m. National Service National Service Dogs were on tour April 25 in Wingham, with this, a quick stop-in to Sacred Heart School to introduce and educate the students as to how a National Service Dog provides companionship to autistic children and how he is trained. The dogs then stopped by the Knights of Columbus hall later that night where a fundraiser for NSD was held.
