Strike a pose The GEMS celebrated their annual parent/daughter night last week at Blyth’s Christian Reformed Church with a fashion show and some dessert. While the girls modeled clothes up for purchase that night as well, these girls opted to sport pajama pants they made themselves. From top left: Michelle Studhalter, Christa McKay. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Spring themeat Guild meeting By Ethel Miner Clare Knox United Church, Belgrave Last evening, when I was walking our dog, a crescent moon hung in the deep blue sky. Frog-song was announcing the arrival of spring. I was caught in the wonder and awe of a new season. Earlier robins had been collecting for a nest. The swollen heads of daffodils in my flowerbed promised soon-to-be flowers. I thought about a recent film my husband and I watched and wondered about our relationship with the land and what the future will bring. On the advice of our daughter, and others, we rented Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth - a film which talks about global warming and its consequences. Gore explains that the world needs to ‘axe greenhouse gases by 80 per cent.’ He tells us we should not throw up our hands and do nothing because we are intimidated by the extent of the problem. Each one of us must take responsibility and make changes. Together we can make a difference. A few days later, the evening news featured a family that is concerned about the environment. The lifestyle changes they are making did not seem too difficult – hanging laundry on a clothesline instead of using the dryer, turning lights off when they left a room, turning down the temperature of their home a couple of degrees and putting on a sweater, walking, instead of driving short distances. Other suggestions included planting trees and recycle, recycle, recycle. The second story of creation found in Genesis tells us God created humans to tend and care for the earth. The earth and its resources are gift from the Creator. By following the 3 Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle we will be better caretakers of the land God has entrusted to us. We can make a difference. Pray that we have the will to do so. FOR ALL AGES SUNDAY ~ 9:45 to 10:45 am WORSHIP SERVICE AT 11:00 am Phone 519-440-8379 308 Blyth Rd.
