(Photo submitted) A celebration to acknowledge the defibrilator campaign for the North Huron Wescast Community Complex is going to be held in the fall. That time of year is later than suggested at the committee of the whole meeting. However, director of recreation/facilities Pat Newson explained to councillors at their April 16 meeting that the fall was probably a better time to hold a free skate. “Right now people are thinking of ball and soccer. My idea is to unveil the defibrilator at a public skate in September, when hockey hasn’t started yet, but the kids are keen to get skating.” The cost of the unit is $2,500, plus $500 for the case. They are also purchasing two training units at $500 apiece. The fundraising campaign was spearheaded by Cole Dunn, a member of the Wingham Novice team. Other groups got behind the campaign and in a very short time had raised $8,000. Newson added that Blyth arena manager Dave Cook is “leading the charge” there to raise funds so that there will soon be defibrilators in both facilities. While the amount already raised far exceeds what is needed to purchase and provide staff training, there could even be other funding available, Newson said. “I called Heart and Stroke and while there is not system in place for us to actually apply, the person I spoke with suggested waiting four to six weeks to see if there is money available. I’ve delayed the purchase in the hopes that we may hear there are some dollars.” Deputy-clerk Kathy Adams wondered if the unit was mobile and where it would be located. Newson said it would be in the lobby. When it’s removed from the case an alarm sounds alerting the staff. “Doctors recommended the location,” said Newson. Adams expressed a concern about waiting. “I would hate to see something happen.” Newson agreed, but added that she also wants to see additional money coming their way if it’s there. “If the dollars are a 50 per cent match I would hate to not see that funding.” The money above and beyond the cost will be used by various groups, such as minor hockey, for additional training on the equipment. “It is a significant commitment for volunteers,” said Newson. Staff will be required to re-certify every two years, with the exception of fitness personnel and lifeguards who require yearly certifications. Maintenance is done through a plan, with people coming on site to ensure the equipment is working effectively.
