BLYTH UNITED CHURCH Greeting at Blyth United Church Sunday was Arletta Hallahan. Ushering were Cliff Snell and Lavern Clark. The choir sang an anthem, The Palms with Cheryl Cronin singing the solo part. Lorna Fraser read a letter from Rachel who had taken the supplies to Uganda for them and had sent pictures of the pen pals the children had received. Jon Hakkers held up the pictures for everyone to see. Lorna also invited everyone to have birthday cake after the service to celebrate the April birthdays with the Sunday school. The children’s hymn was All Things Bright and Beautiful. The children came to the front of the church during the last verse. For the children’s tory, guest speaker Tom Dunbar asked the children if they had done anything special at school to be involved in Earth Day. Some had cleaned up garbage and other things to help the environment. Mr. Dunbar showed them that they could find a mesh bag and put hair and little pieces of coloured yarn in it and then hang it out in a tree for the birds to make their nests with. If they looked later in the summer they would likely see the coloured yarn in some of the nests around the yard. He told them the only bird that would not use it is a hummingbird as they use spider webs so the nest can expand while the baby birds are growing. The scripture readings were from Genesis 1: 20-23, Psalm 148 and Job 12: 6-10. The next hymn was Joyful, Joyful We Adore You. Mr. Dunbar’s message to the adults was, God’s World. Earth Day is celebrated throughout the world. It has been celebrated for 37 years, since 1970. It started very small and on March 21 when day and night were equal, but has since changed to April 22. God gave us the earth to look after and this is what Earth Day is all about, he said. Canadians are blessed but there are some countries where there is either too much water or not enough. Jordan is one of these countries where the rivers are drying up and the water supply is dwindling. For more than a year, North Huron has been working to put a municipal alcohol policy in place. There have, of course, been things to work out. Yet, now as it seemed they were finally getting close, another concern has come to light. At the April 16 meeting, councillor Greg McClinchey explained that the rules require the alcohol under the licence must be purchased from an LCBO, or an Ontario Beer Store or Wine Store. Unfortunately, this excludes agency stores, which is what is located in Blyth. “If the facility they use is in Blyth, they won’t be able to get their supplies from the agency store (Scrimgeours Food Market),” said McClinchey. “When we began the process no one had any idea of this requirement,” director offacilities/recreation Pat Newson said in a phone conversation Friday. Asked by council if this would have a significant impact on the business, McClinchey said, “huge. I spoke with the owner, and they had 30 functions last year and sold approximately 24 cases of beer per event.” Blyth is the only agency store in Huron, he added. “So we are unique in that way.” That fact may help, Newson hopes. “We are going to talk to Alcohol and Gaming. The fact that we are unique, we hope will mean they’ll be flexible. Clerk-administrator Kriss Snell said, “We will have to go with a request. This is our issue and how are you going to help?” “They are encouraging municipalities to licence,” said Newson, “and we want to use our agency store.” Blyth can boast the ‘Area’s’ best storyteller. Phaedra Scott won first place at the Royal Canadian Legion’s Area public speaking contest this past weekend. Scott is a Grade 3 student at Blyth Public School and the daughter of Mike Scott and Arden Farrow of East Wawanosh. Phaedra has advanced to the Provincial competition in Chatham on May 5. Two other local students did very well at the Area event as well. Jacob McGavin of Brussels and Marshall Durnin of Auburn were runners-up in the Grade 4-6 and Grade 7-9 categories respectively.
