The Citizen, 2007-04-26, Page 2Would you believe it? We have a
centrefold in our midst and so
modest about it! In the winter edition
of the Recreational Flyer is a picture
of Jim Armstrong’s nifty yellow
plane and a full-length feature about
the Pietenpol and how it has become
part of life for the entire Armstrong
clan. Robert and Jim show and tell
about the construction and
enjoyment of their favourite plane in
five pages in the magazine – pretty
impressive.
Earth Day is just past but this is
the year that everyone needs to make
an effort to be a better friend of
Mother Nature. Every little bit helps
as long as you’re committed to
leaving the world a good place for
our descendants.
Cloth grocery bags or reusing the
many plastic ones that you have
stuffed in your cupboard is a regular
thing that you can do. Checking 5Rs
before you make a purchase will
help on the recycle end of life.
Organizing a garage sale for yourself
and others also keeps our dumps a
little lighter.
So get serious this week and this
year and do your part.
The tundra swans are on their way.
I didn’t see them feeding this year
but at least 20 of them were in fly-by
mode over Walton one day last week
so spring can begin.
Make plans to head to Cinnamon
Jim’s this weekend to wish Joshua
Gropp the best as he heads out on his
second cross-Canada tour.
BMG Community Centre was a
hot spot for volunteers on the
weekend as many folks spent
countless hours preparing for their
annual fundraising events.
The Maitland Conservation
Foundation held its 19th evening of
fun and food on Friday. Support for
the Nature Centre is the reason for
the festivities. This spot in
Wawanosh is dear to the hearts of
many and they show it by attending
this event every year (it’s like a
reunion).
A lot of thought and effort by the
Maitland Valley folks is evident and
truly appreciated.
Beth Earl and crew fed us well –
Gary kept out of the cooking again –
and that put everyone in a good
mood ready to bid on all the great
gifts available. Terrific evening once
again.
The Optimist Club was ready with
its evening of fun on Saturday.
Support for the Brussels and Grey
Fire Departments was the reason for
the party this year. Hours are spent
gathering donations, organizing the
details and planning the evening all
to make or community a safer and
better place to live.
Cardiff Catering provided their
usual excellent food and left
everyone happy with life. Bidding
on the donations was entertaining
and well worth the price of the
evening.
Thank you to the volunteers in our
community. When everyone offers
and does a little, great things can and
do happen. It happened twice last
weekend. Thanks.
To those of you who ate out often
last week – get back to the Canada
Food Guide and do a little more
exercise.
Enjoy the nice weather.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Watching the last part unfold,
Marg said, “We often have trucks in
and out of here, but when I saw this
one it was clear something was
wrong. I noticed the driver was
cutting the corner too short. I said to
Graham, ‘He’s going to hit the
garage’, and then ‘There it goes.’”
“Then Graham said, ‘There goes
the Volvo.’”
While her husband ran out to see if
he could help, Work called 911, then
her neighbour, a retired nurse.
When they got to the truck cab,
they found Murray, who owned
C&M Transport, slumped over. With
OPP, emergency services and Grey
and Brussels firefighters on scene
Murray was removed from the
vehicle and attempts were made to
resuscitate him.
It was later determined that Murray
had suffered a fatal heart attack.
“He came across that field as
straight as a plum line,” said Work.
A plum line that was running a
straight course for the house, or more
specifically, for the back room where
the Works were sitting. “A couple of
the firefighters said that it was just
lucky he got slowed down by those
trees and the shed or he’d have been
in the house with us.”
Funeral services for Murray were
held on Friday in Lucknow.

Driver
suffers
heart attack
Too close
A tragic story could have been so much worse, when the
driver of this tractor-trailer suffered a heart attack while
enroute. Just outside the north edge of Brussels the truck
entered a shallow ditch, crossing the field and coming to
rest in the side yard of a house. The residents Graham and
Marg Work were sitting in the back room at the time. The
truck destroyed a shed, lamppost, car and some trees.
