Morris-Turnberry councillor Dorothy Kelly raised the question at the April 4 county council meeting to administration. The list she was referring to was of municipalities receiving the Rural Infrastructure Investment Initiative. Chief administrative officer Larry Adams explained that when the criteria first set out the grants were for rural municipalities with populations of 10,000 or less. “We learned later that the criteria (were) extended. But we were unaware that counties would even be accepted.” Warden Deb Shewfelt said that it actually may have benefitted the county. “I believe that had we submitted that application we would not have received the $915,000 social housing funding.” “But you make a good point,” he said to Kelly. “We have to zero in on the opportunities.” Kelly said she wouldn’t want to seem as if the county was being greedy. “But I see Elgin County got $1,500,000.” That statement prompted the warden to offer a wry rejoinder. “That would be the Minister of Labour’s riding wouldn’t it?” For council’s assurance, Adams listed other grants that the county has been persuing, adding that “it’s not like we’ve been lackadaisical in this. We’re not sitting on our hands, but when things came up we didn’t qualify. And I admit that when we did, I dropped the ball.” Noting that he would do his best to make sure it didn’t happen again, the CAO offered an honest aside. “Will I say it will never happen again? No, I’m human and make mistakes.” Get there! This young man could be headed for the Masters one day if his performance last weekend was any indication. He stepped up to the green at last Friday’s 40th anniversary celebration at Hullett Central Public School and drained this put from around six feet out, impressing his onlooking friends. Hullett hosted parents and students alike last Friday evening, inviting them to take part in auctions, games, food, music and fun; all celebrating 40 years of shaping young minds. Obviously euchre players are not superstitious for there were 18 tables of card players at the Londesborough Community Hall on Friday, April 13. The evening was hosted by the Happy Gang Seniors. Mabel Wheeler and Helen Dale took first place with 83 points at the end of card playing. With 79 points Charlie and Sandra Cameron finished the evening in second place. When the points were tallied, Lou and Carol Lakey were in third place with a score of 75. Luck seemed to be with those attempting lone hands for four couples played six lone hands successfully – Lloyd Glousher and Earl MacNaughton, Keith and Phyllis Tyndall, Lloyd and Lillian Appleby and Joann MacDonald and Dorothy Carter. The seniors group will host the next card party on May 11. Stand by your cake This was the call as the live cake auction was set to kick off at last Friday’s 40th anniversary celebration for Hullett Central Public School. All of the faculty members who baked a cake to be auctioned off were ordered to accompany their creation on stage for the live bidding war. The chair of the School Advisory Council Jennifer Fleming is pictured with her baked goods ready to make the school some dough.
