Friends and family joined special athletes at a toll booth located in the parking lot of Zehrs, Wal-Mart and Canadian Tire, Goderich. Members braved the snowy conditions to meet the public and raise awareness and cash for the Law Enforcement Torch Run. The run began in 1981 in Wichita, Kansas when police chief Richard LaMunyon conceived it as a way to involve local law enforcement personnel in the community and to support Special Olympics Kansas. Three successful years of Torch Runs in Kansas led LaMunyon to present the program to the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). IACP bought into the program and showed enthusiastic support and leadership in its growth. With the involvement of all facets of the law enforcement community, including sheriff’s associations, police unions, state, county, municipal, military and federal law enforcement and correctional officers, the Torch Run is now active in 35 countries around the world. The first Law Enforcement Torch Run in Canada was held in 1987 and 17 years later, there are no signs of looking back. That first year, the program generated $100,000 in funds with the participation of law enforcement personnel from Southern Ontario. Over the years, the Torch Run has evolved into a community-based, province-wide event. Nationally, the Run has become an annual event in 10 provinces and one territory. In Ontario alone, this association has raised in excess of $17 million, establishing it as the finest and most profitable Torch Run event/relationship in the world. On Wednesday, May 16, the Law Enforcement Torch Run will start at the Wingham OPP detachment office at 9 a.m. and work its way to Goderich ending at around noon with a wrap-up barbecue.
