By Sophie Jefferson
The first and second meetings of
Wawanosh 4-H’s new club, Good
Food Fast, were held on April 9.
A new member, Erica Bos, joined
us, and everyone was glad to see
Sarah Steele back in the club.
In order to introduce everyone to
each other, youth leaders Sophie and
Ellen Jefferson led a game of Who
Am I? where the members had to ask
each other questions to see what
food was on their backs. The
members sat in their food groups
according to the food they had been
given in the game.
After saying the pledge officers
were elected. Ellen Jefferson
became president, with Jeanette
Schramm as vice-president. Mary
Kate Higgins volunteered to be
attendance recorder, as did Jillian
Martin for treasurer. Sophie
Jefferson and Erica Bos decided to
work together as press reporter.
Jolande Oudshoorn will design the
cover.
Since no food meeting would be
complete without cooking and
tasting, the members broke into four
different groups in order to cover a
few different recipes and make
comparisons between homemade
and from the mix baking.
Mary Ellen Foran led the junior
members to make an at-home multi-
purpose mix, and party popcorn.
Sophie and Ellen Jefferson and
Marita Oudshoorn also worked with
different groups to make farmer’s
brownies and mix brownies, mac n’
cheese and Kraft dinner and apple
spice muffins and chocolate chip
muffins.
During their taste testing, the
members discussed which version
they liked better.
During these meetings, the
members learned many new things.
They discovered how healthy their
eating and shopping habits were by
doing quizzes from the members’
manual. Marita Oudshoorn and
Mary Ellen Foran also taught the
members about healthy breakfast,
snacking and convenience food
choices.
The members also learned how to
inspect packages to find nutrition
and best-before date information in
order to determine whether food is
safe and healthy to eat. The club also
talked about ways to make eating at
fast food restaurants on occasion
healthier.
The members also had a chance to
work on their drawing skills before
the meeting was over in a game led
by Sophie and Ellen Jefferson. The
members competed in the teams that
were made during Who Am I? The
members sat in a line with their
team, and the person at the end of
the line would draw a picture on the
back of the person in front of them
and so on up the line. The person at
the front of the line had to guess
what the food item was.
The next meeting is April 23.
The Ausable Bayfield Maitland
Valley (ABMV) Source Water
Protection Project will host an
informal meet and greet at
Cinnamon Jim’s Café in Brussels on
Monday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to
11:30 a.m. The public is invited to
stop by and chat with staff of the
project, view maps and a display,
and enjoy a cup of coffee
compliments of the project.
The ABMV Source Water
Protection Project is a partnership of
the Ausable Bayfield and Maitland
Valley Conservation Authorities.
The aim of Drinking Water Source
Protection Planning in Ontario is to
protect the quality and quantity of
municipal drinking water sources –
both surface water and groundwater
– now and for future generations.
The provincial government has
passed the Clean Water Act, which
will allow local stakeholders to form
Source Protection Planning
Committees for the purpose of
creating science-based Source
Protection Plans for their
watersheds.
The watersheds of the Ausable
Bayfield and Maitland Valley
Conservation Authorities will form a
planning region, and the two
Conservation Authorities will
provide technical support and
facilitation to the Source Protection
Committee.

Water Protection and the ABMV

ABCDD Gals win A
The ABCDD Gals capped off a great season that included winning the A championship at the
Lucknow Bad Apples tournament in March. Team members are, back row from left: Michelle
Blake, Courtney Zinn, Jill Sholdice, Lila Procter, Terri Patterson, Natalie Heffer. Middle: Michelle
McNichol, Kathy Lavis, Karen Youngblut, Terri Gulutzen, Anne Elliott, Pat Newson. Front: Julie

Jenna Rinn of Blyth travelled to
Saskatchewan in March for the
National juvenile broomball
championships and came back with
a shiny gold medal hanging around
her neck.
Rinn’s home team, the Seaforth
Assassins came up one goal short of
qualifying for the Nationals. Rinn
was scouted by Ottawa’s Seaway
Valley Devils, who ended up
winning gold.
During Rinn’s visit to the
Nationals last year with a Windsor
team, she caught an eye associated
with the Devils and received an
invitation to play with them for the
2007 Nationals.
Rinn scored two goals and had one
assist in the tournament for the
Devils. And while she learned a lot
from her experience with the Devils,
she still hopes that she can one day
reach the National stage with her
home team, the Assassins.
Rinn says she took very much
away from her experience with the
Devils. The Devils have never lost in
the the provincial championships
and employ very strict policies, like
nightly meetings, curfews and
several superstitions involving
prayers, chants, cheers and a Devil
doll, who resided on the bench.
In addition to the policies, the
Devils showed Rinn they knew how
to have fun too, both by winning and
at her expense. Rinn, as a “rookie”
was initiated onto the Devils through
a ceremony involving her on a
scavenger hunt through the streets of
downtown Regina while wearing a
diaper and nursing a soother while
on the hunt for various items.
Rinn got a kick out of it, saying
that most of the people she
encountered knew the broomball
tournament was going on and most
of them knew the drill.
After her performance - on the ice,
not in the scavenger hunt - she has
been invited back to participate in
the Nationals with the Devils again
in 2008, but she still has hopes that
her Assassins will bring her to the
Nationals.
