FROM BLYTHHooked on hobbies
While guest speaker, registered art therapist Sheila
O’Donovan, gave her presentation, some ladies attending
the Women’s Day Out at Memorial Hall last Saturday took
the time to rush the hobby tables while they were clear.
There was a room full of hobby enthusiasts presenting their
wares to the dozens who came out. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Many relatives, friends and
neighbours gathered at the Braemar
Retirement Home to honour Helen
Stonehouse on her 90th birthday.
Special guests were her sister-in-law
Irlma Edgar of Wingham and her
brother and sister-in-law Mait and
Mary Edgar of Petrolia.
During the afternoon, cake and
ice-cream were served by nieces and
nephews. Guests attended from
Atwood, Belgrave, Blyth, Clinton,
Goderich, London, Petrolia, Tweed,
Wingham and surrounding area. It
was a very enjoyable afternoon of
reminiscing and looking through a
family album put together by Tricia
Daer of London.
Helen received many gifts, cards
and phone calls during the past
week.
We are sorry to hear that Kathy
Abell-Rinn is a patient in London
hospital. We wish her a speedy
recovery.
Blyth Swinging Seniors will meet
Wednesday,April 25 at 12 p.m. with
a potluck lunch. All seniors are
welcome. Come out and enjoy the
fellowship.
Deb, Fred, Jon and Quinton
Hakkers, Marilyn and Dave Craig,
all of Blyth had Easter supper with
Doug, Joyce, Heidi Craig and Jamie
of Atwood last Saturday evening.
Blyth UCW had another
successful Women’s Day Out.
Everyone enjoyed the program and,
of course, the food. Everyone was
given a cup and saucer on a stick to
put bird seed in and place in their
garden or a flowerpot.
BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
Greeting at Blyth United Church
was Terry Richmond. Ushering were
Elaine Brown, Nancy Hakkers and
Terry Richmond.
Guest speaker, Tom Dunbar
welcomed everyone to church on a
beautiful Sunday morning. The
flowers in the church were in
memory of Earl and Margaret
Caldwell.
The choir sang an anthem, Be Still
My Soul.
The children’s hymn was They’ll
Know We are Christians. The
children went to the front of the
church during the last verse. Mr.
Dunbar asked the children if they
knew what special day was coming
up in the next two weeks. It is Earth
Day on April 22.
He told a story of a man whose
only job was to carry water on his
shoulders uphill to his master’s
home from the river. One of the pots
had a crack in it and never arrived
full. His explanation was that he put
that pot next to the roadside that he
had planted seeds in and the water
from the cracked pot watered the
seeds as he travelled up the hill to
his master’s home. He picked the
flowers to decorate it.
Conor Brooks carried the candle
of Christ down to Sunday school.
The scripture readings were from
Acts 5: 27-32 and Psalm 150.
Mr. Dunbar’s message to the
adults was The Spirit Among Us.
Jesus’ disciples were put in jail
overnight by the Roman government
after the death of Jesus. An angel
came to them and told them to
continue in their teachings.
The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to
those who have faith and obey Him,
said Mr. Dunbar. The Church is a
place to support each other in the
community.
One of Blyth’s own has been
making quite a wave out west, being
very careful that wave doesn’t scare
the fish away though.
Bob Hull, originally from Blyth,
has made his way across the country
based on his passion for
sportfishing, a passion that has
mapped his life’s course and
eventually led him to the love of his
life.
Bob met Jill, his future wife, on a
fishing trip to the Dean River. Jill
had been a sportfishing guide for
nearly 10 seasons when she met
Bob. Their courtship quickly gave
way to a marriage followed by a
honeymoon in New Zealand, which
Hull called a three-month
honeymoon fishing for trout.
Hull just completed his 21st
season of guiding. Guiding was
something Hull always wanted to
do, but didn’t know if that dream
would come true through several
rough patches in his life.
Hull grew up with a brook in his
backyard that was home to his
earliest fishing encounters with his
father. These times in his backyard
soon gave way to family trips, that
all included fishing Hull said.
Eventually, a thirst for adventure
led Hull out west to Houston, British
Columbia where he struggled for
several years, still chasing his
dream.
Hull says he almost starved to
death in his early years out west.
After seven years of working at a
sawmill, Hull began work as a
sportfishing guide and never looked
back. After receiving some tips and
getting better with the rod, Hull soon
found himself working seven days a
week, seven months a year, doing a
job that he describes as fun work.
Now with over 20 years in the
business, Hull is one of only seven
licensed sportfishing guides on the
Bulkley River in B.C. His job,
however, has spread his talents much
further than the west coast.
Hull has guided clients from the
United States and Europe and he has
travelled with his wife on fishing
trips to Costa Rica, Florida and all
over B.C.
