HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-04-19, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 19, 2007.A Brussels youth put hisknowledge of geography to the testand came out a winner. Matthew Cardiff, 15, son of Cathyand Jeff, competed in the GreatCanadian Geography Challenge thispast weekend and earned the right tocompete in the national contest. A student of F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham,Cardiff first took part in the school’sGrade 7-10 competition. To qualifyfor the provincial contest, he had to do an on-line test which was supervised by teacher Terry
Walker.
He and his father travelled to
Toronto for the contest this past
Saturday. Competing against the top
50 in the province, Cardiff finished
in the top 10 and the right to
compete nationally.
“He didn’t seem nervous,” said
Cathy, adding that while their busy
schedule had limited the amount of
time Matt could spend studying, his
interest in the subject probably
helped.
Walker, who quizzes his students
from the geochallenge website eachweek said this is the second time inas many tries that he’s had a studentqualify for the provincials. “And tohave one now move on, is terrific. Icouldn’t believe it when Matt told
me he was going on to the nationals.
It’s just great news.”
“This is a huge accomplishment
for Matt, for our school and the
world studies department.”
The national test will be an on-line
quiz. The international competition,
which is an all expenses paid trip, is
in San Diego this year. The top two
from the National finals attend.

The Cadets met three times last
week at the Brussels Legion in
preparation for drill competition last
Saturday. The 12-member drill team
travelled to London to participate,
the first time for the Brussels Corps.
They were one of the two Army
Corps participating, with 32 Air or
Navy Corps being represented.
It was an eye-opening experience
for the Cadets, as to the discipline
and precise co-ordinated attention
demonstrated by the more
experience Corps.
The Corps placed last in the
competition but felt it was a valuable
experience.
The Thursday night darts had 11
taking aim at the boards. The first-
place team was Roger McHardy and
Sandra Josling. The second-place
team was Norm Dobson, Catrina
Josling and John Harrison. High
starts were shot by Norm with a 67
and Marlene Little shooting a 97.
The Friday night supper of roast
pork was enjoyed by a good crowd.
This week will be roast beef.
The Saturday fish fry, the first of
the season was very well attended
with over 180 people for the meal.
The cooks included Rick McDonald,
Gord Jacklin, Jim Alton, Terry
Buchan, Norm Dobson and
Lawrence Machan. The Kitchen
staff included Deb Cann, Judy
Buchanan, Sandra Josling, Helen
Brenie and Jo-Ann McDonald.
Comrades Jo-Ann McDonald and
John Lowe attended the District C
Convention in Preston on Sunday.
They were pleased to accept a
membership award on behalf of
Greg Wilson, membership chairman
and witnessed the presentation of
the Margo Richardson, Memorial
Trophy to Comrade Eric Ross and
absent partner Anita Little as
champion mixed dart doubles
players for District C.
General elections are April 24 at 8
p.m. Comrades are encouraged to
attend.
This Saturday,April 21, a mystery
bus tour load will be stopping at the
Branch around 3:30 p.m. so stop by
and see who might be dropping in.
A Mother’s Day dinner will be
held at the Branch.

It turns out the Brussels Legion can fry a good fish. Last
Saturday they held a fish fry that brought dozens of people
from their homes to enjoy a home-cooked fish and chips
dinner. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

ACCREDITED
Oh my, we’re already well past the
middle of April. It seems to me that
we flip the calendar to start a brand
new month and in the next blink that
new month is nearly done. I have yet
to figure out, but I’m sure it has to
do with age, the number of people
who want part of your life and how
much time is spent goofing.
So as for me I need to get my act
in gear or April will be gone and I
haven’t even got the front porch
swept off yet.
Recent conversations with several
different folks have me convinced
we are not taking food seriously. We
eat unhealthy foods regularly and
often don’t know where they came
from, let alone were made. We are so
unconcerned we have neglected to
insist our elected officials be smart
about our food policies with labels
of the place of origin, not who
packed it for us. We need to be sure
to read the label to give our bodies
the best we can.
With the new Canada Food Guide
hot off the press it’s a good time to
study the requirements of our
bodies. We are so careful to maintain
the health of our vehicles with
proper fluids and maintenance but
our bodies we overload. Food does
not need to be complicated and the
easiest way to be healthy is to follow
Canada’s food guide.
News items are loaded with the
rates of obesity and diabetes both
caused by improperly fueling our
bodies. Portion size is the main issue
in this house but concern about the
ratio of sugar, fat or salt is also
important. Fats of all kinds are
hidden in strange places and because
we don’t understand or choose to
ignore, the pounds go on and the
vessel health gets poorer. We are
killing ourselves with our eating
habits.
When health issues surface and
changes need to be made we become
very aware of our total intake of
food. To start a chance we need to
read the labels of the food we offer
our families. Our awareness of total
fat, salt and sugar in a serving needs
to be as clear as the price of gas for
our vehicles.
Stores stock what we demand if
we want healthy with the least
additives we need to tell them. We
are experts on sports scores and the
latest gossip but we do not know
how much fat is too much in a
day.
And so the number of folks with
diabetes grows and the people that
are obese flourish. We can stop this
just by being aware of what goes
into your mouth.
Dig out the Canada Food Guide
and read it like a good book. Your
body and family will thank you.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
