HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2007-04-12, Page 17(MS) — To keep cool during the
hottest days of summer, Gates
Corporation encourages motorists to
have their vehicle air conditioning
(AC) system checked by an EPA-
certified auto technician.
Gates engineers say an AC system
that operates marginally is more
likely to fail when temperatures soar
above 32°C and humidity levels are
as high.
Having the air conditioning
system inspected and serviced now
will help assure the system is
working properly when you need it
most.
While vehicle air conditioners
should be serviced annually, various
warning signs may indicate
immediate service.
For example, the system may fail
to cool to the desired temperature or
a musty smell may come out of the
vents when the air conditioner is
operating.
Other signs of problems include
water on the vehicle floor, an engine
that is noisy or runs rough when the
air conditioner is in use or an
overheated engine.
To test the cooling performance of
an AC system, park the car in a
shady area out of direct sunlight. Set
the parking brake, place the
transmission in park or neutral and
start the engine.
Turn on the AC and put it in the
recirculation mode with the fan
switch on high and the engine at
2,000 rpm.
After 10 minutes, put a
thermometer in the center dash vent
and read the temperature. It should
be at least 6.7°C cooler than the
outside air.
The average discharge
temperature should range from 7°C
to 12°C.
During servicing, Gates
recommends you ask
your technician to examine the
engine belts that operate the air
compressor and check for leaks from
the cooling system and air
conditioner hoses.
If the refrigerant is low, the
technician will likely top off the
system.
