After adding in the water, sewage and waste management figures, Huron East council is one step closer to an approved budget. After their April 3 meeting, a few minor details were discussed and treasurer Brad Knight expects that council will formally adopt the budget at their April 17 meeting. Taxes were also broken down for the councillors by municipality and averaged out so councillors will have an idea of exactly what ratepayers are going to see when they open their first bill. These documents will also be provided to council at their next meeting. As discussed at their budget meeting, taxes in Huron East will be going up 13 per cent. This issue was not debated further, leaving the taxes where they are for the finalization of the budget. Knight pointed out that despite the increase, which may look substantial at first, the municipality’s tax rates are still among the lowest in Huron County. The rural townships, Grey, McKillop and Tuckersmith, are expected to be the three lowest in the county with Seaforth coming in as the lowest town. Knight said that once the water and sewage numbers were added to the budget, the budget remained balanced, so finishing touches are all that’s required.
