The surplus for the Belgrave
Community Centre is a little less due
to a deficit incurred in 2006.
In a budget analysis presented to
North Huron council at the April 2
meeting, it was noted that the board
had relied on the $13,622 surplus
throughout 2006. At year end a
deficit of $2,088.48 was realized
leaving a year-to-date surplus of
$11,533.52.
The hall and arena rental revenue
had been higher than the previous
year. Six buck and does and the
weekly Early Years program rental
were contributing factors.
Skating and ice rentals were down,
however, though the Belgrave
Kinsmen did offer free skating
periodically throughout the season.
Though there is no longer
organized hockey in Belgrave, the
facility is often booked for shinny,
pickup hockey, broomball practices
and skating parties.
The community centre’s biggest
fundraiser, the annual fowl supper,
raised $7,784, just slightly lower
than the 2005 event. Secretary-
treasurer Barb Black stated that
expenses had been a little higher this
year than in the past.
The Belgrave Community Club
donated $900 and a speaker system.
The Belgrave Optimist Club ran
the ball booth. Early in June, a
break-in netted thieves
approximately $200 worth of pop
and candy, and resulted in damage to
the booth door. The Optimists were
unable therefore to pass on the
summer profits.
The Kinsmen installed a television
in the community hall and plan on
having a dish installed.
Repairs and maintenance expenses
were up overall as were utility costs.
The Belgrave Kinsmen and the
playground enhancement committee
completed Phase II of the
playground project installing the
skateboard park. The board
contributed $3,000, which had been
held in the arena account. The
Kinsmen donated labour and the
balance of the expenses.

The WOAA fundraising campaign
is into its third month. So far just
over $145,000 has been raised of the
$347,000 goal.
The campaign was launched in
late January to provide a permanent
building for the WOAA, which
oversees minor baseball, hockey and
senior hockey across Midwestern
Ontario.
Corporations, communities and
individuals are being approached
and encouraged to make a three-year
commitment to the campaign
between now and June 10.
Some of the major funds raised so
far, include $26,590 from
individuals, and $8,850 from
community groups including minor
ball, hockey and the Silver Stick
program. Recently Hanover
Raceway made a $10,000 pledge
over three years while Heartland
Credit Union, West Wawanosh
Mutual Insurance and Miller
Insurance each made donations of
$2,500.
Fundraising chair Gary Gravett of
Goderich says he’s hoping those
donations will help spur other local
Corporations to help support the
WOAA’s programs.
Upcoming fundraising events
including Fastball Pitching Clinics
with Doug Neil in May, a WOAA
Brunch and Auction at the Knights
of Columbus Hall in Wingham on
June 24, and the WOAA celebrity
golf tournament at Goderich Sunset
Golf Course on Saturday, Aug. 11.
