BLYTH UNITED CHURCH Greeting at Blyth United Church were Barb Richmond and Fred Hakkers. Brett and Bryce Glousher gave everyone an Easter egg from the Sunday school. Ushering were Joann MacDonald, Lois van Vliet, Brenda Brooks and Elaine Brown. Guest speaker, Bruce Whitmore welcomed everyone to church. Flowers in the church were in honour of Lenora Davidson’s 90th birthday on April 7, in memory of Mary and Lloyd Walden, Tyler Wilson and Don Craig. Everyone sang Happy Birthday to Lenora Davidson. The choir sang an anthem, Father Almighty. The children’s hymn was Jesus Christ is Risen Today and the children went to the front of the church during the last verse. For the children’s story Mr. Whitmore had a hot-cross bun and asked the children if they knew what it was. He told them that a baker in Scotland had baked the first Easter hot-cross bun. The bun is round like the stone in front of the empty tomb, it has a cross made of icing which connects it to the Easter story. He then told the children how it was connected to the Easter bunny because the bunny’s tail is round. The scripture readings were from Psalm 118: 1-2, 14-24 and Mark 16: 1-8. Mr. Whitmore’s message to the adults was Because of the Empty Tomb. He started out by asking the congregation if they remembered some special dates; for example, the death of Princess Diana, the death of Elvis Presley, 9-11 and Paul Henderson’s winning goal for Canada in 1972. We remember these dates but when our generation is gone will these dates be remembered? he asked. The death of Jesus is remembered for thousands of years because of the empty tomb. The UCW made a special presentation by Deb Hakkers to Lenora Davidson with her Life Membership Pin. The last hymn was All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name. Everyone formed a circle of friendship around the church sanctuary and repeated the New Creed followed by the Benediction and singing of Go Now In Peace. Everyone was invited to stay and have birthday cake, ice-cream and coffee and wish Lenora Davidson a happy birthday. Blyth’s own Jill Cooper, a Master Corporal in the Canadian military, is on a pilgrimage to Vimy Ridge to mark the 90th anniversary of the epic battle. Cooper, a photographer in the military as well, was in France to photograph the ceremony which was attended by nearly 30,000 people. Thousands of soldiers, veterans, government officials, students and Queen Elizabeth II was on hand to honour Canada’s fallen soldiers. The ceremony has particular significance for Cooper, she set foot on the same ground her grandfather did 90 years ago. Arthur Cooper, a British-born Canadian, fought in the bloody battle that commenced on Easter Monday 1917. Jill Cooper is the third generation in her family to wear the uniform of Canada’s armed forces. Not only did her grandfather serve, but her uncle, who shares his father’s name,Arthur Cooper served in Canada’s Air Force during the second World War. Now 88, Arthur Cooper still remembers the battle well and recalls memories his father had about the battle of Vimy Ridge. He was haunted by the loss of a close friend, who died by his side at the epic battle in France. Although many Canadian soldiers lost their lives at Vimy, the Canadians won, despite enduring tough conditions. After joining the military six years ago, Jill Cooper has embarked on several assignments, but this will no doubt be her most personal assignment to date. While she has spent the last few years photographing military manoeuvres and great advances in modern warfare as record for the military, her research on her grandfather takes a much different path. Cooper has been tireless in her efforts to learn more about her grandfather and his efforts at Vimy Ridge. Although he died when she was nine in 1971, she has spent years pouring over letters, film footage and old photographs nearly a century old chronicling her grandfather’s service to his country. While she has found several photographs and other items that help her to know more about her grandfather, Cooper found that the letters he sent home provided the biggest pieces to the fascinating puzzle. Through the large amount of letters that he sent home, Cooper found her grandfather to be a brave anti-aircraft gunner who served his country at a young age and took down many enemy planes. Cooper is grateful to be in France honouring her grandfather and others who lost their lives fighting for their country.PUBLIC NOTICE Re: 2007 COUNTY OF HURON BUDGET This notice is given under the provisions of the Municipal Act, 2001, S.O. 2001, c 25, s 291(1) Notice - Before adopting all or part of a budget under section 289 or 290, or amending such a budget, a municipality shall give public notice of its intention to adopt or amend the budget at a council meeting specified in the notice.
